I didn't learn about the Shantae games until they started gaining popularity on the 3DS with Risky's Revenge.
Expectations:
The game looks like a blast, and I'm really excited to play it. I have both the 3DS Virtual Console version to support the devs as well as a GBC reproduction of the game for the sake of playing it on native hardware, and my daughter plays the repro all the time, and frankly it makes me a little jealous. Now I finally get to play it!
Day 1:
That wave was cheeky and perfect. Shantae easily lives up to all the hype surrounding its presentation. The game looks phenomenal for a GBC game and the music is excellent. Animation is smooth and fluid and everything just looks and sounds amazing.
Something about that hair whip attack...
The very beginning of the game has you rushing through a city under siege to get to Risky Boots' pirate ship.
Once you've sent her packing you're free to check out different locations in town, or just leave and travel through to the next.

Once you've sent her packing you're free to check out different locations in town, or just leave and travel through to the next.
In Shantae, different cities are connected via these field maps, and eventually you can warp between different cities if you collect the right items. I have to say, and I know I need to give it more time, my knee jerk reactions to this game are... not great. Yes, I know I said it looks spectacular, but once you get past that the actual gameplay just isn't really doing it for me. Something about it just feels "off" compared to my preferred platformers... That's not to say I'm putting this one down any time soon! ...
Day 2:
Suspicious save point is suspicious...
I finally made it to Water Town where I met Bolo who was... not helpful. I mean the guy had his priorities straight, sure, but... I should mention that the road before Water Town is horrible. Huge waterfalls to climb, tons of blind jumps, annoying enemies that come out of nowhere, etc. Of course when you die there, even if you were just inches from your destination, you'll have to start all over on whatever side you entered the zone from.
I mention that because I'm now told I have to go all the way BACK across those water falls to get to the Water Shrine!
Monkey!
The first dungeon in the game wasn't particularly difficult or complicated, which is good. It also introduced the first animal dance, allowing me to transform into a monkey... sometimes... See, the GBA Player on the Gamecube, unlike the Super Gameboy on the SNES, does introduce a bit of lag to whatever game you're playing. Typically, Gameboy games aren't so precise that you can't adapt, but when it comes to the dancing system in Shantae that's not really the case. I'm sure with enough practice you could get used to the weird timing, but for me it was an exercise in frustration.
Later, to confirm the issue was indeed the latency, I would try the game in both a GBA SP and my GB Boy Colour, as well as the 3DS VC version In all cases the dance was much easier to manage, and the timings made a lot more sense.
The rest of the dungeon was pretty straight forward with some light puzzle solving, and eventually I'd meet the game's first real boss...
Just like the dungeon before him, the boss was very straight forward, just, hit the eye! There was a point in the fight where the room would fill with water. The expectation was that you'd transform into a monkey during the build up to the attack and climb the walls to avoid. That... did not happen. Luckily I only got hit by it once before the boss went down.
After that it was ANOTHER run across the falls to start working my way to the next city. As usual, I was at the end of the zone, exit literally inches away, when a rogue snake manages to land that last hit...
Uhhghghghghhhh....
So here's the problem: After two days of playing this game, totally around 3-4 hours of actual playtime, clearing the first major dungeon, and unlocking the first cool ability... I'm not actually having fun. Like, at all.
...
Yeah, I'm calling it.
Conclusion:
So, I'm really conflicted about this game. On one hand it looks and sounds absolutely incredible for a GBC game. The presentation alone is worth the price of admission... I mean... not for a legit cart but... you know what I mean. On the other hand, the actual gameplay just feels so unexceptional considering how much fanfare this game garners. I want to love it, but I just can't. I want to give it more time, but the thought of actually playing more is putting me to sleep.
I'm actually really interested in play Shantae and the Pirates Curse for the Wii U, as I feel like with some refinement and with a bigger screen in mind, a game set in this universe with these characters could really be a blast to play. As it is, the half-genie's first outing is just really hard to recommend.
Liked:
- Could be a GBA game. Looks and sounds incredible. Absolute technical achievement.
- Characters are very charming and full of personality.
- Fun writing and interesting ideas had me looking forward to talking to every NPC I could find.
Disliked:
- Unforgiving death system in an already difficult game. Dying means starting whatever zone you're in from the beginning.
- Part of the difficulty comes from being a Gameboy game with such large sprites, as avoiding damage becomes nearly impossible.
- Another issue with the large sprites is the frequency of blind jumps, force you to play through levels very slowly at best, and often jumping and "hoping for the best" at worst.
- Taking a wrong turn often meant wasting 5-10 minutes of time, probably dying repeatedly, and then just being told you went the wrong way.
- The hair whip attack is really cool in concept, but really awkward in practice, making combat feel tedious.
- Actual gameplay itself just felt uninteresting, and failed to compel me to continue playing the game in spite of its faults.

If you love platformers and metroidvanias this game is definitely worth checking out!
HOWEVER, I really recommend to play the Nintendo Switch version which allows you to create savestates (let's you save the game at any point and restart from that point when you want). I'm not sure if other ports like the 3DS one also have savestates.
This game can be very frustrating without savestates because:

Tips
This game is absolutely awesome, it manages to pack an exciting metroidvania with stunning graphics, an expansive world and great character designs into a Gameboy Color game, a system that you would never think could run a game this impressive, undoubtably this is one of the most impressive games on the system.
However, it’s also full of flaws, the game’s difficulty can be really annoying sometimes and the game gives you absolutely no direction so without a walkthrough you’ll be at loss for what to do. However, if you grab an emulator with save states (or the rerelease of this game) and a walkthrough you’ll have a blast with this game.
I'll be talking about the Switch version of the game. I'm a big fan of the series. I've played every Shantae game that has been released so far along with their DLCs, so I was pretty excited to play the first game in the series. I ended up disappointed. World is too big, screen is too small, there's insta-deaths everywhere, and sometimes the NPCs will straight up lie to you about how to progress. This game is absolutely incredible on a technical level that it runs on the gameboy color, but I just didn't find it very fun to play. This is my least favorite game in the series.
Playing the original Shantae for the first time and man, it's showing its age in several ways. BUT I am liking the challenge compared to the, really quite easy, most recent games.
Would love a remake with the slicker controls and polished visuals and sound of the modern games but the difficulty and creativity of the old.
Just a note to say I'm excited for the original Shantae coming to the eShop!
Oh, Shantae.. How I've been neglecting you. After a long break due to the surplus of backlogged anime and TV I've bult up, I finally decided to pick up where I left off.

Last time I hit a roadblock and had to backtrack. After many deaths and a trip back to Water Town, I was immediately directed to Oasis Town.
Reaching Oasis town, I was then given the location of the games fire-themed dungeon.

But not before a quick bath. Yes, this guy runs the Oasis Town public bath..
Finally reaching the dungeon(with many deaths along the way, ugh!), I was able to access the entrance with the help of a friend's pet crow. He proceeded to peck at the green orbs and spin 360 degrees, successfully opening the temple door. It was kind of funny to see in motion.

This dungeon was much easier than the first dungeon, or so I thought at first. It involved puzzles using blue and red light, that were required to take out certain enemies to acquire keys, and also use said colors to activate certain platforms for navigating the dungeons maze-like corridors.

After getting lost for awhile, I finally found the dungeons resident captured genie, who was more than willing to teach me a new dance that allowed me to transform into this beauty:

This transformation is required for breaking blocks, smashing tree stumps, and other general destructive actions.
Finally navigating to the end of the dungeon, after getting lost for a half an hour, I found a corridor blocked by crag-like rocks. Woo, I get to put my new transformation to use!

HULK SMASH!
Finally, after several hours of getting lost looking for keys and dying some ridiculous deaths, only to have to run back to the dungeon all over again, I encountered the dungeons boss.

This battle required on the fly transformation to Elephant form. His hands would appear creating platforms that you'd jump on, transform into elephant, then bash him in the head. Then, amazingly, his cranium would split open exposing a green gem, which had to be whipped repeatedly with Shantae's hair.

Success!

Fire Slate acquired! Two more dungeons to go!
After the end of the dungeon, I saved and started heading back to town, per usual, feeling rather accomplished. I got further in the game than I ever thought I would, and the second dungeon was a lot more inviting and fun than the first, despite getting lost for awhile there. I'm hoping this trend continues...

Who knew the trek back to civilization would be my undoing. After dying multiple times on the way back to town, I decided to call it a night.
That's Shantae for you. I'll go back to it soon, hopefully.
I think I'll have to listen to more Buddha's Delight to get pumped for this game again. I've no problem doing that.
So i decided to boot up Shantae and get my hour of gaming in. I try to get at least an hour a day in, or else I find that I stop gaming for extended periods of time. Not that I don't enjoy gaming or that I have to force myself, but I love so many other things as well, so I have to keep gaming at the forefront to make any progress. Last time I played I beat the first dungeon and got the monkey transformation.

It's a very cute look, but it leads to many deaths due to being so hard to control midair.
After getting the transformation and beating the first dungeon, I returned to Water Town to pick up some boots I'd been saving for. They let me perform a kewl new aerial kick that i can't seem to hit anything with since Shantae controls like a tank.

.. but at least she looks stylish doing it.

So after returning to Water town and discovering that Risky Boots, my apparent arch nemesis, is attempting to gather the elemental artifacts to make her steam powered ship the ultimate destructive machine, I'm told to go to the second temple to prevent her from stealing artifact number 2. She already stole the water one, so my little dungeon escapade was pointless, and not only does Shantae feel useless to control, shes actually useless. Some backstory: Risky Boots discovered the power of steam and has been charging tariffs/extorting money from anyone using the sea that she has staken a claim to.
Leaving water town, I head due east.. into some incredibly awfully designed areas, with monsters out of the wazoo. I don't even attempt to kill anything anymore since it's easier to just dodge things than actually trying to kill them. I pass a zombie infested area, get to a save point, and.. oh god.. it's a dead end. Why game, why! Looks like I might have to resort to a faq.
Shantae is not impressed...
In hindsight, I did pass a curious looking temple entrance.. but it was inaccessible... I think. Something tells me I need to backtrack...

The professionalism. I know.
Well, that was my one hour of gaming. It seems like I did nothing really, but it's because I spent most of my time dying getting to the dead end only to realize I missed something along the way. Can't wait to boot this game up again! *cough*
Oh man.. this game is so boring. Why is it held in such high esteem? The gameplay feels super clunky... and it's just.. just.. not fun! Can I finish it? I'm afraid my dalliance with the series may be over too soon if I don't., and my friend speaks so highly of it!!! Well, to be fair she didn't recommend this game, but I've the tendency to start series' from the beginning and work my way forward, often to my own detriment. Shantae, all I've gotta say is.. your hips DO lie! Your legacy is all a lie! Ok ok, calming down, I will continue forward.
