After getting addicted to Slay the Spire, I've continued to search through the dumpsters of Steam for another card game that I enjoy. Looking for something similar but different. I've tried many titles (Blood Card, Deck of Ashes, Hearthstone, Neoverse, Dicey Dungeons) but I don't think any of them have quite scratched the itch as much as Overdungeon (although Dicey Dungeons is actually pretty good).
Overdungeon is being developed by this Japanese dev called Pocket Pair. From a surface view it appears to be a simple Slay the Spire ripoff but with an anime flavour. You explore a procedurally-generated dungeon through your chosen path and you build your deck along the way. You can play as one of three characters, each with a slightly different deck and with different techniques to battle against the enemy encounters. Each dungeon/act is filled with normal enemies, elites, treasures, random encounters and a final boss at the end. Instead of a "heart" at the end, you fight against an "egg."

But if you actually give the game a shot, it has enough weird stuff going on it separate it from its influences. In practice it plays a bit more like a tower defence game. …

But if you actually give the game a shot, it has enough weird stuff going on it separate it from its influences. In practice it plays a bit more like a tower defence game. As you draw and play cards from your deck you actually construct buildings and spawn various cute animals (sheep, chickens, bears, etc) which all do various things. Some buildings/animals may attack or defend, others give you buffs, others might make changes to your deck, and so on.
Another difference is the timer. There's no slow or careful decision-making in this game; you have to act very fast, as it all plays out in realtime (not turn-based). Sometimes the best strategy is to just keep spamming your best cards; if you're fiddling around too much your opponent will kill you before you have a chance to play your hand. In the late-game it all becomes extremely chaotic and silly and your screen is filled with all the creatures and turrets and projectiles you've spawned.

This game is definitely less-serious and less-difficult compared to Slay The Spire or others in the genre, but it has its own unique charm. I really like it, and I find myself drawn back in for another round. There are many modes and difficulty settings and other interesting options I haven't explored yet. This game is peculiar and wonderful and definitely worth checking out if you like card games and you're looking for something similar but with a twist.
