Shadowrun is an action role-playing game.It was adapted from the cyberpunk role-playing game Shadowrun. The game is the second video game adapted from Shadowrun, and has a more open ended style of gameplay than its 1993 Super NES counterpart, Shadowrun by Beam Software. The game is set in the Shadowrun universe, in the 2050s. A time where the blending of technology and human flesh is common; it is around the time the Matrix, a huge computer network, came online, with the ability to jack into its cyberspace directly. It was also a time of magic renewal: a phenomenon known as The Awakening occurred, where magic returned into the world. Sorcery was once again possible, and slowly and seemingly at random humans began to mutate into orcs, dwarves, elves or trolls. This time of upheaval was not without political conflicts: mega-corporations began to control the world. But with their magic, native shamans threatened them and the world geography came to a complete change. The Amerindians and Elves reclaimed an area called Salish-Shidhe, close to the free city of Seattle, a major city in the newly formed United Canadian and American States. Read less

Escort Mission, The Game.

For me, playing Shadowrun on Genesis was a somewhat miserable experience. Before the second hour of gameplay I realized that the basis of this game is just doing escort missions or "go talk to this NPC" quests. And repeat them over and over and over again. You have to do this in order to get EXP and cash that you absolutely need if you want to progress. I should mention right away that during my playing time I used fastforward constanty, also savestates and a guide, in addition to having the manual at hand at all times to check the maps of each zone.

This game gives you a lot of freedom, in the worst sense of the word. That is, you are free to do things terribly wrong at every moment. At the beginning of the game you are weak, really weak. Even though I chose the "Samurai" class who are supposed to be the most skilled at wielding guns and resisting shots, even the first enemies I encountered were kicking my ass! I happened to visit the first "dungeon" available and I was promptly destroyed.

Slowly, after doing many (many!) of the first Johnson / "quest giver" missions I finally got the money to buy my first permanent companion and advance a little in the game's plot. Then I acquired a second NPC and accumulated more money. I know now that there are many other Johnsons and that apparently the fastest way to make money is through "hacking" however I was never forced to interact with cyberspace and all my adventures happened in the physical world. I found all that Matrix stuff just too convoluted to care.

In short, it is a very interesting game with an absorbing atmosphere, mediocre storyline, perhaps too ambitious for its time. In terms of gameplay it's... uhm, tolerable, although I can't imagine I would have finished it without fastforward.

Not recommended.
