It has been quite a while since I've played a metroidvania that actually kept me engaged. The last ones I can remember were Ender Magnolia, Voidwrought, and Shadow Labyrinth. But Before I Go is a surpisingly competent Metroid-influenced game, with a nice Dread kind of 2.5D art style.
The focus here is on both playforming and Metroid style gun combat. But the maze-like world is also super well-designed and a blast to piece together. Everything is pretty minimal, which is what I tend to enjoy over the complex RPG-heavy metroidvanias.
I do wish the game offered some help in finding missing items, I got to about 92% and had no clue where I missed something. The art style is not flashy or particularly detailed, but it gets the job done. I also think some of the combat abilities got repetitive.
But overall a solid ~10 hour metroidvania, recommended if you like Metroid, Aeterna Noctis (there is some real challenge here), and maybe the art style and atmosphere of Haak (subdued color palette) meets Hollow Knight.
