The Best (?) RPG on the N64 *

This review is for the Fushigi no Dungeon: Fuurai no Shiren 2 - Oni Shuurai! Shiren-jou! - Nintendo 64 - Japan (2000) release

What a pleasant surprise this game was! I played this on original hardware using an Everdrive and a patched ROM with the English translation. I originally wanted to try it out just to see if I would like the newest Shiren game for the Switch that had caught my eye (more on that another time), but I did not expect to be engrossed enough to actually finish the whole thing!

Speaking as someone who loves RPGs but isn't super familiar with the roguelike genre, I fell in love with the gameplay almost immediately. The strategy and item management aspects are really complex and interesting, especially for the time. Although some concepts were more difficult for me to grasp, the process of figuring out the best gameplay styles was a lot of fun. I'm so used to hoarding every item in RPGs, and that isn't at all the best way to play this game. You will die a lot on your playthrough, but each death comes with a lesson learned.

I'm also a big fan of this graphic style, and the soundtrack is excellent as well. If you have an N64 and an Everdrive, I would highly recommend at least trying out this game. In my opinion it ranks as possibly the best RPG on the system.

Just started playing the English patch of this on my Everdrive. After an hour of playing (and another 15 minutes fiddling with Everdrive settings to get the game to save correctly) I can already tell how addicting this game is going to be. Won't have much time this weekend to play more of it but excited to try again early next week!
