Russian style (Fallout) Tactics?

You have a smart pause system similiar to 7.62 High Calibre but your basic command and control is more like a standard RTS with the additions of some simple commands like tossing grenades and ducking or prone stance changes. The story is a bunker of soldier types and they go outside 20 years or something after the nukes drop to see what's what. They slowly encounter the remnants of raiders and whatnot, to learn that they are the sole 'authorityes' of the world. you slowly capture weapons at first, gearing up your six man team or so and finding new survivors along the way. (there is some light questing in it as well) You can spec them and give them stat points in different weapon systems (handguns, machine guns, shotguns, etc) so it plays like a squad based RPG... sort of. You also have a base which you manage... sort of, (in a buggy and confusing sort of way, I can't quite articulate due to the nuances of the interface.). the secret sauce of the game is vehicles which you capture, and upgrade. First light vechiles such as transports then armor, and even artillery. Which, is something Fallout Tactics doesn't have. What was once a squad based TBT RPG becomes more like a fully fledged RTS. and you are managing logistics of a vehicle pool with ammo, fuel, repairs, crew, etc... This is the heart of the game and where it gets quite complicated (and a bit slipshod, half-assed and buggy, but still good fun)
There are some serious problems in the game. Main one being that there are some real issues with controlling your units and the AI. So, it does not play nicely as an RTS game at all (It's Russia Tactics Squad game!) Often your units will freeze and not respond. The engine itslelf is prone to crashing and sometimes things will just get 'weird' Also to top it offf: The game gets insanely hard as you simply cant lose your units. NONE. as it is permadeath and a big setback to lose both your comrade and your tanks. The missions in it are heavily scripted and that can make things teidous to play because often the nature of these missions will whipsaw dramatically (IE. enemy reinforcements come from opposite side of the map to flank you)
despite its numerous flaws I really liked the general idea of this game: squad based TBT RPG with commandeered upgradable vehicles in postapocalyptic setting. (It was great fun with some cheats) ;P
There is a mod for this out there that looked good, but i cant recall the name. I might check it out but The Fall Last Days of Gaia looks like the sequel to SoA and thus seems a better pick. (Again the engine is nasty piece of work.)
I can't reccomend the game to normal people unless you like those hardcore 1c strat/tactics type games that have kinks. if so you'll love this. It's rather unique, at least i never played anything like it
