I am on a journey to beat 360 random Xbox 360 games. Here's my next adventure.
Game number 21 was EA Sports MMA. This is a fighting sports game, where you participate in different mixed martial arts matches and fight your way to victory. Starting with this game, I am adding a new rule/exception to the Road to 360 series: sports games do not require beating the career mode. I need to spend 2 hours with the game and just try to have as much fun as possible with it. Sorry, if this makes it feel like I’m not really “beating” the games… but sports game careers are designed to take hundreds of hours (to last you the entire year) and they aren’t exactly my favorite outside of local play with my friends.
The gameplay in this game is something that I’m pretty unsure of. There is a mix of kicking, punching, grabbing, clenching, and floor maneuvers. Everything here is designed to simulate all the different fighting styles that are present in MMA… which may have been too much for 1 single game to master. Everything here is designed to simulate all the different fighting styles that are present in MMA… which may have been too much for 1 single game to master. For example, a kickboxing character sucks once they have been brought to the ground.
Most of the fighting is pretty satisfying and I honestly had a good time beating up on the computer players here. I’m not sure if it is because I have minimal experience with the game, but I thought that certain controls were unresponsive at times or didn’t register the correct move. All of your attacks need to be initiated by flicking the right stick in a certain direction and this isn’t exactly the most precise way to be doing things. Half rolls always needed to be exaggerated when I performed them.
Overall, EA Sports MMA isn’t a bad game and I would probably recommend it for people interested in the MMA scene. You do get to act out your dreams of beating people up and bashing their faces in. Some of the controls don’t seem all that responsive though and they can sometimes feel overly complicated. I don’t think there are very many other options for gamers into MMA, so go out and pick this one up I guess. For me, this game was more like a 4/10, but I think it is objectively serviceable for fans. (6/10)
I spent 2 hours, 8 minutes, and 26 seconds playing EA Sports MMA.
I have spent a total of 226 hours and 53 min on the Road to 360 challenge so far.
