Introducing Mario Strikers: Battle League, a 5-on-5, soccer-like sport with no rules - do whatever it takes to win! Get gritty and try to score the most goals by tackling enemies, using items, and pulling off score-boosting special shots. Super Mario series mainstays like Peach, Toad, and Yoshi put their cleats (and stats) to the pitch and will stop at nothing to score. Customize your characters with gear that can augment their stats and appearance. Take the carnage online or pass the ball to players locally - just look out for the electric fence.

Mario Sports Games Are Not For Me

I played this one. After playing this, Mario Tennis and Mario Golf all for the Switch, I think I've come to the conclusion that Mario Sports games are not for me.

Mario Strikers has nice graphics and if you play with friends, I could see why it would be fun, but I'm mostly a single player gamer, and the single player options here are very, very bare bones.

I also don't like how Nintendo basically released this, Mario Tennis and Mario Golf on the Switch "incomplete." What I mean by that is it is obvious that not all the content that was meant to be in the game made it to the game before release. Nintendo will rebuttal that this is meant to be DLC, but this is not the way DLC should be rolled out. Smash Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe have shown a much better way of doing this, where the games came out completed and the DLC added to the experience. Here, it feels like parts of the game were unfinished, but Nintendo wanted the game out, so they released it and would offer the other parts as DLC later. I find that lazy and unacceptable. …

Again, if you love multiplayer games, I'd probably add another star to my review. The graphics are good, the frame rate and performance is overall smooth, but you will get bored of the single player in about 3 hours, and then you will wonder why you spent $60 for this $30-$40 game.

Fun
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I really enjoyed the Gamecube and Wii games, so I was quick to pick this one up. I liked this game a lot. My 7-year old daughter picked up the mechanics pretty quickly and like it, too. It seemed to correct for the ease with which super strikes could be performed in earlier Mario Strikers games. I thought it was cool that you can add gear to characters, but I found that even with full gear, my team didn't perform as well as they did without any armor. A few of the cups took several attempts in normal mode before I beat them.

Mario Strikers: Battle League (Switch)

A polished average game
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

The game feels very limited and repetitive, all interactions are scripted and multiplayer doesn't make sense, worse than FIFA. Animations are very nice and I liked the challenge in single player, a missed opportunity to build something durable

This game is a bit too complicated for my liking. I found myself fumbling with the controls pretty often. It's pretty hard to execute any of the "perfect" maneuvers and blocking hyper strikes seems inconsistent. The AI is horrendous. They will go out of their way to avoid items, hyperstrike orbs, the ball, and defending against opponents. The gear options seems cool in theory, but I already have enough decision fatigue from the characters, let alone customizing the gear too. The goalies are either blocking everything or blocking nothing and there's no in between.

So this game is out now. I've played it for a bit: completed the tutorials, played some quick matches and played through the first cups (which lead me to see the credits roll already). Here's my first impressions.

  1. The gameplay is really solid. Once you get through the myriad of tough tutorials and finally get to play the game, the controls and mechanics start to click and it becomes easier and easier to pull off cool stuff. It feels like every move and mechanic has some use even though some of the more advanced ones are pretty situational and hard to pull off in the heat of the match. The game is also really fast. A lot of stuff happens in just seconds.
  2. There's very little here for people looking for single player stuff. The cups are most likely made as a single player mode but they are really barebones. They are basically just sets of matches against opponents with different stats and difficulties. Playing them rewards you with a lot of money that can be spent on new gear for the characters. Because the gameplay is solid and the cups serve as nice practice, I didn't mind going through …

Because the gameplay is solid and the cups serve as nice practice, I didn't mind going through the cups and I'm going to play through the harder cups as well. Maybe it'll prepare me better for the eventual dive into online play.
  3. The roster and gear options are rather limited at the moment. They are going to expand them with free updates most likely but as it stands now, it could have used a couple of more characters for variety.
  4. Visually, the game ranges from nice to adequate. The graphics do their job, nothing outstanding but good enough. The gameplay is smooth 60fps which is very welcome for a game as fast and fluid as this. Reaction animations and replays are in 30fps with unfortunate dips in fps pretty frequently. The animations are top notch, though, and there's such a care in the portrayal of the characters and their personalities that makes the previous Mario sports games on Switch look incredibly lazy and needlessly safe.
  5. The music is pretty kick-ass. I guess it could be described as Super Mario tunes played by a hard rock band and that wouldn't be too far off. There's heavy riffs and guitar solos everywhere.

I've yet to experience online play but the main online mode, Strikers Club, seems to be pretty cool per Nintendo-online-play standards. I'll see if it lives up to the promise.

Played through the demo for this, it seems maybe a bit deeper than I was expecting? Hitting just the right timing gives you an advantage when tackling, dodging, shooting, and receiving passes, and there's an instant pass/shot system that potentially allows you to set up some tricky team plays. If the playerbase holds up, I definitely think it'll be fun with coordinated teams online.

Also the way the character stats work makes it seem like Peach won't be total garbage tier, which is a nice change of pace for a Mario sports game.
