I had a pleasantly fun time with this game. Definitely a big difference between this and the modern open-world Insomniac games, but hey, that's to this game's strengths. It's not trying to be the PS4 Spider-Man, or even the MCU/Sony Spider-Men. It's very much doing its own thing, and having a blast while doing so.
Four different Spider-Men tackle very video-game-y levels to get a magical macguffin to save the universe. Or something. I wasn't super paying attention to the story. But hey, this isn't the kind of game where you really have to. It's just here to have good fun.
Ya got standard Spidey, Symbiote Spidey, 2099 Spidey, and Noir Spidey, each with some fun gameplay variations. Fun fact: this game inspired the comic book storylines that would go on to inspire the modern Spider-Verse films. So in a way, this game is the proto-Spider-Verse. Kinda cool in retrospect.
Another fun fact if you're a simp for the webhead: each Spidey flavor is voiced by a previous Spider-Man voice actor:
- Regular Spidey is voiced by Neil Patrick Harris, who did the MTV CGI "New Animated Series"
- Symbiote Spidey is voiced by Josh Keaton, who did the Spectacular Spider-Man series, among other Spidey-related roles
- Noir Spidey is voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes, who did the 90's Fox Spider-Man series
- and 2099 Spidey is voiced by Dan Gilvezan, who did the 60's Spider-Man animated series
Not gonna lie, hearing Josh Keaton and Cristopher Daniel Barnes was a treat. Honestly, I would've played the game just for them alone. The fact that it was also fun was a nice bonus.
Definitely a bit rough around the edges, though that might've been my emulator experience. And again, it's not gonna blow your mind with a life-changing coming-of-age story. But that's cuz it doesn't really need to. It's here to show you a good fun time, and boy, was that time fun.
