Good Enough I Suppose

Final Fantasy Dimensions II was a little bit of a disappointment. On one hand I didn't really like the waves of enemies battle model they did here. Like a free to play rpg does on mobile, which is fine, but not after making a great old school throw back like the first FF Dimensions.

Other than the strange choice of battles, which was a big downfall because it got extremely boring at times, I liked this game. I thought the story was good, even if there was some plot points and stuff that I wish were better explained rather than cast aside. I really loved the idea of these twins that were extremely powerful with time magic were allowed to experiment because of their genius; who then accidentally created a massive problem, know as the Mysidia Crisis, that I then somehow got me wrangled into fixing. It was a great idea for a story and for travelling through time and dimensions and I wish it had a better gameplay loop to go along with it.

The characters, which I wasn't very big on them at first, grew on me as the story went on. They became friends, as they should feel in all RPGs, that I wanted to travel with. They had flaws and things that were annoying about them, but they were endearing enough to make me smile and root for. The main character, Morrow, was my biggest issue, but I did enjoy the "twist" ending revolving a bit around him. It was kinda cool and left a good taste in my mouth after all was said and done.

Other than the wave situation in battles I enjoyed the other aspects. You have signets that you can attach to your person, which in turn is how you learn different abilities or spells. It was very reminiscent of Final Fantasy IX, except I actually thought this was implemented better, because instead of them being attached to weapons and you not wanting to take a weapon off until you learned a particular spell, it was in a separate form known as signets.

Overall I think this game gets a bad wrap. Sure, it isn't what I want, but it certainly isn't as bad as the haters would have you believe. If you can get passed the wave battles then you could find yourself having fun in this world.

The more I play this, the sadder I get. FFD1 is one of my favorite Final Fantasies. I don't really know why, but maybe I was just really craving the nostalgia it provided in the mid-2010s. This mess, however, is just a mobile click through. Make a few decisions. Autobattle. Do some menus. Autobattle. I'm about three hours in, and nothing's really happening. It has all the benchmarks of a make-it-up-as-you-go-as-long-as-the-$$-keeps-rolling-in mobile game. Also, the characters are typical and annoying, but man Aemo is awful. A girl with amnesia? Shocking. All of her lines are like "Dark... and light?" "Elves...?" "Dwarfs...?" "People...?"

@WardCove does Aemo ever get any less annoying?

Alright, sure, I'll play your gacha excuse for a "sequel" to Final Fantasy Dimensions. Right now, the only thing they have in common is the "something good happened" fanfare.

I hope I like this.

I'm on chapter 4-1 now and the story is picking up a bit. I find myself having fun with this game even though I think the choice to do waves of battles to continue the story was a little poor. Still, I'm happy I'm enjoying it enough.

I'm about 10 hours in and I gotta say that the gameplay loop on this is so strange. I get that they were trying to make it more mobile friendly, but the first game was so much more fun overall. Still having fun in small bursts, but I definitely can't play for long periods of time.
