good knockabout metroidvania.
managed to play a lot of the game without getting the doublejump, through pure daft ding dongery on my part, and I am impressed how playable it is without! impressed and annoyed, honestly; why have it at all? there are like three other, more interesting ways to traverse the y axis in this game. the weapon system is cool, brings some very metroid 1 feels where solving puzzles with the right combination of mods can feel like you're breaking the game.
the slow reveal of what's up with the zones and your character's role in the story is cool. other reveals are less so.
todd in the shadows had this comment where he said flo rida is who you call when you want to guest a rapper but you don't care which one. this is the flo rida of metroidvaniae. if you just want some mini metroid, this'll do the job.
Xanthiom Zero is the second game by the Side Scape developer (one of my favorites from early 2023), and his take on a classic Metroidvania is nearly perfect.
It is a classic sci-fi setting, but features the devs signature map design style. The level design is maze-like and has great secrets and exploration. The combat is fleshed out and really customizable. The art style is simple and great. The UI is very unique and super polished.
I loved it and it was everything I hoped for.
