Preliminary: Ahhh 1991 is going to take forever. Every game so far has been well worth a proper play session. I figured an NES run n gun/platformer would be quite passable in 1991, and the controls are a bit clunky especially with movement + attacking, but I'm already borderline hooked, they did the different characters really well, and the music of Mission 1-2 is a jam. Ahhh
I do wish you got healed after bosses or something. Or some collectible to heal?
Day 1
Nice finished Mission 1 without any guides, cheats, etc. It seems Nintendo games were uh, more doable for me when they were NA releases :-p I wonder why ;) haha. Cool that they give you a password and that you get to select different characters for each mission.
I am starting to debate calling it quits and a 3 star. As good as the Play is, it still has the NES sprit flicker/slow down and lacks something, like a particularly good Look (and tho the Sound is good, it's still missing an oomph). But then I finish whatever boss I'm on and can't help but continue :-p
Yeahhhh on 2-2, another one of those non-linear levels …

Yeahhhh on 2-2, another one of those non-linear levels where you have to find the checkmarks, I burned out. Still, a great, late NES title.
Look: 7/10
Sound: 8/10
Play: 7.5/10
Feel: 8/10
Attachment: 7.5/10 Full of neat ideas. Just a bit "late to the party" for the NES and lacking an "oomph"/1991-level-Look/etc . I can imagine how excellent this would ahve been with SNES capabilities!
Overall: 7.6/10
Completion: Mission 2-2
Playtime: ~30 mins
Beat. This was a fun Contra style 2D shooter platformer with multiple characters. I liked how each character was mandatory for 1 mission so there was a chance to try them all out. 2 stood out for me and were always on the team. Snake eyes had the best jump and 2nd best melee, while Rock and Roll had the best gun. I mostly used Snake for his platforming, playing more like Ninja gaiden and killing mostly with sword. He got his gun maxed out because I did not realize the pistol icons were gun power ups. Once I realized that I maxed out Rock and then Grid iron. Snake's ranged attack was weak with no spread while most of the other characters got some spread angled upwards. Rock had nearly a full screen spread by the time he was maxed, and I used him on bosses until he was low hp. Some bosses were tough to defeat without taking a ton of damage while others were very easy once I figured out the pattern. Grid iron and Duke were the balanced characters, while Blizzard seemed the worst. The final mission unlocked general Hawk, who was an absolute bad ass …

Grid iron and Duke were the balanced characters, while Blizzard seemed the worst. The final mission unlocked general Hawk, who was an absolute bad ass with infinite flight. He did most of the final mission, other than swapping to Rock to shoot some of the tougher and tricky enemies. Rock also wrecked the final boss. I had to look up a map online to find the last bomb place; there was a floor near the beginning that had to be shot. Easy 4 directional shooting and smooth swapping between characters and weapons were great, though the bomb placing stages were a bit tiring and repetitive. Each mission had a fun action stage ending in a boss, then a more open bomb stage which required wandering around finding the locations before exiting through a door. Many of the screens looked identical, and without any in game map it was more annoying than it needed to be. There were too many secret hidden passages and blocks that could be destroyed. The time limit was extremely generous though. There were also vehicles to drive that were somewhat fun. Then was another boss followed by another action stage that repeated rooms to the point where I wondered if it was looping. Then the stage boss.
I really liked the multi character aspect, reminding me of Ninja Turtles and Castlevania 3. Though I wish they were more unique with different shot patterns and perhaps even a special ability to unlock secrets. The biggest flaw was the open bomb placing stages. I think it would have been more fun with more linear action packed stages instead. There are 2nd and 3rd quest modes with increased difficulty which I likely will not do.

I'll be using this game as a way to also talk about my very loved GI Joe 12" / 1:6 scale collection. Ask me anything about any of my action figures or statues.
