First thing of note is clearly going to be: It feels good, I am not sure if we are living in times where successfully making a FPS game that feels good is that much of an intense accomplishment but trust me, it feels as if it is rare to find FPS games that flow this well, and it even gives tribute to the first generation of Doom Clones I feel while still maintaining good gun feel, I think the dynamite is straight out of Blood. I could go into the finer details of what makes a FPS game so robust but personally it is not my greatest expertise (unless the game is really easy to notice it is lacking in that department), but I think it is good to start with the most important statement: It is fast and FUN.
And this is a game you want to be fast in because you always need to be moving in rooms as enemies will get you if you stay still for just a little, it is interesting to note that Shift doesn't necessary make you run, it just makes you faster, you can press Shift mid-air and it will make you …

And this is a game you want to be fast in because you always need to be moving in rooms as enemies will get you if you stay still for just a little, it is interesting to note that Shift doesn't necessary make you run, it just makes you faster, you can press Shift mid-air and it will make you faster immediately, and you get pretty ridiculously fast. Only downside to this is that your finger might hurt a lil bit from putting the pinky all the time on Shift.
The tone of this game is pretty out there to say the least, it is like the art director went for a cute cartoon style but the writer wanted Trailer Park Boys, I guess the clash of seeing modern guns but with a coat of Egyptian tomb decorations is kinda funny too, personally I'm not entirely sure if the Egyptian theme is that realistic, and I don't even mean that in a joking manner, sometimes it feels as if Arabian designs blend in there or even Asian? Like I don't think it is just Egyptian. Later on it tries to excuse itself by re-entering redneck territory and saying it's also reptilian conspiracy stuff which I guess is relevant to redneck mythology.
As a roguelike some of the power ups can be a serious make it or break as there are joke powers that might even ruin your whole run depending on how well you deal with them, if anything some of the forced power ups are a serious inconsideration. The idea of making every power up essential to pick up spices up this game plentiful, it makes for a great handicap and a fresh experience every time, it isn't just about being the most overpowered build, with that said, there are elements that do allow you to feel as if you are progressing as the RPG elements are pretty fair.
But what makes the scroll mechanic truly fascinating is that there are cases in which this game might change full on core design values, and while doing so, feels like a 100% completely different game, it is like you are playing a thousand FPS games at once at some points whenever a scroll changes the design of the game completely. I think there is so many variation in this game that I might have beaten it once and still haven't found out new ways to play it, after all, it is based on chance on how you play this game. Depending on the scrolls it could go from Doom to Call of Duty just by changing some mechanics here and there, however, just because it gives you a new playstyle does not make it any lesser, so this is an FPS game for fans of FPS games, almost all of them.
You can even on an upgrade tree unlock new character builds that give you new start up weapons and active abilities, and a lil special ability, like a lil MOBA FPS or something. Yes it seems as if this roguelike is trying to do it all and manages to make every single aspect flow well with each other, it is a simple, but surprisingly very complex roguelike.
There is an insane production value directed towards the music, and you can tell by the memorable sound design, but it is also a pity because not much of the music is that memorable, some sounds yes, some melodies? Not so much. Whenever drums are involved though, make sure to have a good time with the soundtrack, especially the neon level, basically around the last levels the music gets really good.
It is so odd that this game decided to make the protagonist swear, because outside of that you could of wielded a higher demographic considering there is no blood, everything else is friendly, and before you say "But there are guns in the game!", the most popular game as of now is Fortnite, with realistic tactical shotguns, the guns in this game have LESS realism than those. Sometimes it feels as if they forced the demographic to be adult only because the developer was not ok with guns being a kids thing.
Many people see the flaw of "It makes you grind to be better" but I think adding a variety of choices to a game that otherwise you could be very lucky to beat at first is nice. And as you go, you unlock new weapons that give out completely new strategies, I have sinked too many hours into this game and every single second I spent in it was an absolutely joy that made me think of nothing else except be concentrated in the game, it's claustrophobic design if anything suffocates any chance of you not being focused on the extreme action going on. It's like being stuffed in something made out of gold, like a sarcophagus.
Serious Sam + rougelight is a great idea, but progressing through the levels isn't at all interesting. It's upgrades for upgrades sake.
Hmm, this is basically where tower of guns left off but its a bit more than just an alternate take of Mothergunship (plenty which it didn't get right) instead of opting for gear upgrades it has a roguelike model for character upgrades and classes, and It has what really might be best described as a slime rancher aesthetic.
These arcade like procedurals are an unusual niche subgenre of FPS, and i don't find it engaging really, but for plenty of people who only have a half hour to sit down and play something they are ideal. (I also keep wondering when they'll become a defacto VR-FPS model, because even while quite average, they are so much more interesting than the many mere wave shooters that exist)
