Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a roguelike dungeon crawler. Available as pure ascii or with tile graphics, playable offline or as a web version. DCSS let's the player create a hero from a large number of races and classes, then sends him off into the dungeon to fetch the Orb of Zot. While descending through the dungeon, players will encounter a variety of different enemies to kill, sneak around, or even befriend. The game features very in depth mechanics, comparatively simple controls and poses a very hard but fair challenge. Read less

The best rogue that I have played

I have spent a fair amount of time playing Rogues with a lot of enjoyment but no great success. I seldom have the patience to consider every key stroke as required by the best of these games. In my time playing these games, this has stood out as the best.

I have spent a fair amount of time playing Rogues with a lot of enjoyment but no great success. I seldom have the patience to consider every key stroke as required by the best of these games. In my time playing these games, this has stood out as the best.

The developers of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup strive to remove the possibility of grind, and to re-balance the game with each new version. As a consequence, during each play through, the player is compelled to press on: without recourse to grind, without hoping for a deus ex machina, and within a game world that is perilous from the start to the end.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a constantly evolving fantasy rogue-like with an absurdly active development community, focused on making the best tactical game they can. This involves avoiding no-brainer equipment choices, encouraging the player to play logically rather than by calculations and spreadsheets, and attempting to make a rogue-like one can win without ever looking up outside information. The end result is a massive strategic heap with dozens of character builds, hundreds of enemy types, and enough randomly spawned content to guarantee that no two games are ever the same. It's hard and unforgiving, but not sadistic or impossible.

After initially playing the free downloadable version (located here: http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/downloads ), I started playing the online version. That was back in 2010. Since then, I've competed in three tournaments and I've edited the game's wiki ( http://crawl.chaosforge.org/Crawl_Wiki ) countless times. This is definitely not a game for everyone, but if you enjoy strategy games that appear simple on the surface but pack endless depth, this is for you.
