Empire is the name of a computer game written for the PLATO system in 1973. It's significant for being quite probably the first networked multiplayer arena shooter-style game. It may also be the first networked multiplayer action game (although Maze War is another possibility for this distinction).

Well, unfortunately, this is multiplayer only. And it doesn't seem frequented enough to guarantee that any time soon. Seems like a brilliant, fun game from the videos of groups and descriptions. Well, unfortunately, this is multiplayer only. And it doesn't seem frequented enough to guarantee that any time soon. Seems like a brilliant, fun game from the videos of groups and descriptions. The controls seem fun, but a bit too complex for my usual taste. Still, seemed surmountable for sure. Anyway, really wanted to give this an earnest try, but alas, it really only seems to be a valid rating if 4+ players and preferably many more. Seems like it'd be a blast, though.
