The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang is an action-rpg starring the titular hero, a young vampire prince who must rescue his parents and save the inhabitants of the Vladamasco Islands from the evil Von Hesler. But is it really his handiwork, or is there someone else controlling him? Unravel the mystery while traveling to various locales, fighting Von Hesler's henchmen and picking up (CPU-controlled) companions along the way. Spike McFang has three main methods of attack: by striking out with his cape, throwing his hat like a boomerang, or using a magic card. Cards can also heal his health or give his companions extra strength. Spike can also devour the still-beating hearts of his vanquished foes (or the dropped tomatoes of his vanquished foes if you're playing the sanitized North American version) to regain health. There are a total of four different hats that Spike can purchase as upgrades in his battle against animated garlic bulbs, bomb-throwing cats, head-spinning plants and a plethora of other dangerous enemies. Beat. I thought this was a Spawn game until I started it, just from misreading the title. It started out decently enough and the combat mechanics were novel at least. The cape twirl melee attack that hit in all directions and even seemed to make you invulnerable, the super whirlwind from melee attacking too fast that did a large amount of area damage but left the character unable to do anything for several seconds, and the charge up hat throw. The hat throw was the more useful attack but it was a very awkward combat style to stand there for a couple seconds charging up each throw. I skipped the 2nd hat in favor of saving up for the 3rd, and by the time the final hat was available my money was maxed. The worst part of the game was the awful combat balance after the very beginning. Enemies took too long to kill, dealt too much damage and there was far too much importance on xp level. Many rooms (especially the ice stage) had far too many enemies to reasonably defeat, so the way to play was to run past everything and only fight at the easy grind spots. Grind up to the level of the boss and then fight. I hated how almost every boss healed back to full health for a more difficult phase 2. Phase 1 was too hard by itself! Seemed like they expect you to grind money for a full supply of healing items. I did not find the attack card items very useful, but I saved the few that I had for the final boss. I ended at level 13 vs the final boss who was 16. The bosses were well designed, with a variety of attacks that had to be learned. It was just too bad the boss fights dragged on for way too long and had such small margins of error due to hitting very hard. I did manage to glitch the plant boss by getting out of bounds and zoning to the next screen. The fight restarted when I went back, but the boss graphics were broken.

This game has nothing of interest and probably should not have been made. It has none of the exploration, puzzles, world building, fun loot/items or in depth combat system of better SNES action rpgs, and is too difficult to be a fun little romp. The silliness does not help.
