Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!

This was my favorite of the original 3 games, mainly because I found it easier than the other 2. I found that the focus on animation didn't hinder this game as much as it did in DKC2 (less transition animations). This game has more of a focus on level gimmicks, so I could see other people struggling with this game more than the others, but I thought they added some nice variety for the most part. I didn't mind Kiddy as much as I thought I would, but he can be annoying when you fail the stage as him. I was only able to beat the first 7 worlds and skipped the bonus world. I got what I wanted out of the game and I don't plan on going back for 100% completion.

This title is a strong but unfortunately slightly divisive entry in the DKC trilogy. Technically, it’s excellent, the visuals push the SNES to its limits with detailed pre-rendered graphics, and the level design is varied and creative, Dixie and new partner Kiddy Kong offer distinct gameplay styles, with Dixie's hover ability still being a standout mechanic. That said, the game doesn't quite capture the same magic or atmosphere as its predecessors, the soundtrack, while good, feels more ambient and subdued compared to the one in second title.

The overworld exploration and side quests are more expansive but slow down the pacing a bit, eve though in theory they would be a very good new mechanic introduction to the series at the time. It is a polished, challenging platformer with clever design, but it lacks the emotional punch and tight focus of Donkey Kong Country 2, still a worthwhile play for fans of the series or SNES platformers.

What also stands out is how experimental the game feels compared to the previous entries, the vehicles like the hovercraft and motorboat expands exploration beyond the traditional map traversal. Some of the later worlds feature inventive environmental mechanics, from lightning that temporarily illuminates hazards to tricky water currents. The bonus stages and hidden collectibles remain satisfying to hunt down, rewarding those who pay close attention with meaningful progression toward the true ending.

Overall, this game feels like a confident refinement rather than a reinvention, it may lack the darker tone and iconic musical highs of the previous entry, but it compensates with mechanical polish and a brighter, more playful identity. While it sometimes struggles with pacing and atmosphere, the Rare quality is undeniable. For people willing to embrace its slightly different rhythm, it offers one of the most content-rich and technically impressive experiences on the SNES.

The best for last!

I played this co-operatively with my cousin on the Switch, along with the previous two Donkey Kong Country games. This one is my favourite by far! The explorable world map, the gorgeous outdoorsy levels, the difficult-but-doable gameplay--I loved it! Of the three, this is the one I'd pick up again for another playthrough without a doubt.

I'm going to miss monkeying around in these games. I think I'll have to pick up Tropical Freeze at some point!

This game has absolutely nothing appealing to me. The graphics are ugly, the movement is clunky, and what's worse, the level design boring and terrible.

Every single obstacle in the first level is a timed door that you cannot see from where it's activated. It's like the level designers realised that the playable character moves like a tired snail on a road covered in molasses and the only think they could think of for a challenge is "can you reach the for before it closes?".

Everything is so slow and stiff and it is touch and go whether going up a rope will make an enemy appear right in front of you die to the weird pan of the camera.

And I have to reiterate how hideous the game looks. The weird pseudo 3d sprites looks awful and everything looks murky, blurry and brown. The character designs of the apes and the monsters are, to put it bluntly, repugnant.

The graphics is something that makes me feel like I'm in a Twilight Zone episode because a lot of the reviews I see online praise the game visuals. One claims that the game sports "beautiful visuals" while also showing this screenshot of a murky, brown, ugly mess. This HAS to be some elaborate prank.
