This area is getting me excited for DK bananza!
My contract at work is ending soon so before they let me go I've used some holiday to go to my favourite retro shop in the search for a Super Nintendo and boxed games to complete my DKC collection. Sadly he only had an unboxed SNES, it's yellow, it's a dirty, and it doesn't seem to like the power supply from my extension cable, and yes I'm butchering the experience by plugging it into a modern TV, but it's beautiful! Now I can play Donkey Kong Country 3 after over two decades since last owning a SNES!
I know it's the nostalgia talking, but I'm really amazed by how games like this hold up. DKC 3 is 29 years old and yet the music is great, there's an open map to explore, a vehicle that upgrades as you progress, collectibles, secret bonus areas, rideable animals, memorable bosses, and the combo moves you can do between Dixie and Kiddy.
It was also nice to see two save files still on the cartridge when I booted it up. They could be decades old. I never can bring myself to delete those kind of things so I'm keeping them on there with one save slot left for myself:)

I'm not much of a collector but this came through the post last week! Been too busy to fully appreciate it but I'm admiring all the artwork now it's the weekend!
DKC was my first and favourite gaming experience growing up but I never got to see or hold the boxes, so now I'm on a quest to own the original three games boxed! DKC 3 was my all time favourite, so that's why I've gone for that first, I'll hopefully collect the other two in time.
The booklet is my favourite part, all in colour and with some beautifully cursed artwork I've never seen before. I love that all the enemies and objects get their own writeups too!

Lest anyone think I'm speaking out of pocket, I have now finished all three SNES Donkey Kong Countries. And I still maintain they're ugly, frustrating messes with poor controls and stupidly "difficult" areas/frustrating on purpose to pad length. The last area in this one, between the lightning, and the conveyor belts, and the boring last boss, makes me want to …

Playing through this classic for the third time and appreciating the odd/unique 3d styled visuals
It occured to me that I've never done the collectibles that the various bears in the cabins want. Also never noticed this 'hidden world' that one of the bears speak about.

Something really exciting about coming back to a favorite childhood game only to realise there's still new stuff to see!

I was aware that David Wise had done the score to the GBA port of this game, but I never played the GBA port. Still haven't. But I finally decided to check out his tunes for the port and hot dog, these are some gosh dang tunes. The opening track is Metroid-esque. There are bops. There are ballads. Wise is doing so much on a GBA port. If you, like me, enjoy Wise's work on DKC1, 2, and Tropical Freeze*, I implore you to listen to this!
Here's some favs in case you are cautious about putting on an entire GBA musical score in the middle of a January day.
There's a fair amount of reincorporation of old tunes in this soundtrack too. I imagine Wise thought this was his opportunity to finish the series and revisiting some of his previous hits made sense. It comes across as a real celebration of DKC! For an example, here is the title track.
*Grassland Groove from Tropical Freeze, which I have shared on this site before, is as close as music gets to like a full on religious experience. Just put this Donkey Kong track on and get overwhelmed.

I finished Donkey Kong Country 3 today which final piece of my play through of the DKC trilogy. DKC3 holds up well against its predecessors bringing more of the same fun platforming, awesome level designs and brilliant sound track.
