Starflight is a space exploration role-playing adventure video game developed by Binary Systems and published by Electronic Arts in 1986. Originally developed for IBM compatible and Tandy systems, it was later released for the Amiga, Atari ST, Macintosh and Commodore 64. A fully revamped version of the game was developed for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991. Set in the year 4620, the game puts players in the role of a starship captain sent to explore the galaxy. There is no set path, allowing players to switch freely between mining, ship-to-ship combat, and alien diplomacy. The broader plot of the game emerges slowly, as the player discovers that an ancient race of beings is causing stars to flare and destroy all living creatures. Read less

I've got one hour of playtime on the Sega Genesis version so far, and a couple hours of reading beforehand! A complex game for the time of its initial release (1986), back when Electronic Arts was a respected top-tier developer (along with Broderbund). I was gaming in '86, but didn't have an MS-DOS machine when this launched and somehow I missed it on the Amiga when it was ported to that a few years later.

So far, it's fun open-world stuff with a huge bunch of space to explore. I've got the hang of the intro mechanics and have an idea for what my immediate goals are. Dunno that I'll make it super-far, but I wanted to at least experience this one before moving onto the Star Control games at some point (which came later and share some developers).
