killerstar's review of Light&Dark

The game's fine but it just doesn't have enough variety even for the small size. There are a total of 10 stages (9 + final boss) and honestly they all feel exactly the same. The bosses have slightly different attacks and movement but not different enough to need a change in strategy.

The visual style looks good, but again, the plain blacks and whites don't allow for a lot of variety so every "biome" looks the same. It also doesn't help with readability of projectiles and attacks.

But the gameplay is fun enough and there is some room for broken builds that mow down on enemies. A key upgrade was anything that heals you when you deal some kind of damage, which is fun because it makes you up the aggression. On one run I had an upgrade that slowed down enemies, with one attack that also healed me when damaging slowed-down enemies and another attack that did more damage to slowed-down enemies. So I would just deal hell to enemies that couldn't catch me and even if I took damage I would heal instantly.

Also weird music. It's not bad but when I see the gothic silent movie look …

Picked this up as a more simple and probably short experience. So far it's fine. Gameplay is fun and hectic and upgrades do change the feel of combat and platforming. I do feel that it's not varied enough. Even after a short 3 hours, runs are too similar. It doesn't help that the severely limited palette consisting in the colours Black and White and the complete lack of environment variety makes every room and area look the same. Also it's hard to distinguish enemy proyectiles from other stuff.

It's a simple roguelike, you can get infinite dash invulnerability and it drags on for too long with no dmg, having to break a run to unlock more bosses feels like an artificial impediment to complete the game in just one good run.

Oh this is out! I wish I wasn't playing a million other things, I'd grab this right now. Really enjoyed the demo. It's a bit like Rogue Legacy meets Edgar Allan Poe meets 1920s silent cinema.
