Not a big fan of the RNG here.

What I can say about this choose-your-own-adventure game is that it is based on the classic book from the 80's, where you take on a quest to recover a dwarven hammer relic.

As there are Dungeons & Dragons elements to it, the outcome of your adventuring will be decided not only by choices but also your character stats and items you carry. I am no DnD fan myself but The Forest of Doom is sort a convenient way to familiarize with the game type when you don't have any physical books to borrow or going digital is the only way.

I feel like there are a lot of trials-and-errors as you explore the treacherous nature of this adventure book but this is why I appreciate the bookmark save function to allow you to rewind after an error or your character's death to try different routes. The RNG isn't always favorable, where I at first started out at mediocre health and strength stats, only to struggle through combats that followed. The second run, on the other hand, the higher stats rolled made the adventuring a breeze.

I haven't come back to this after I completed one adventure playthrough. Only those into …

You didn't take the specific correct route? You lose, lol.

This "game" can be summed up as "Roll a couple of digital dice until you lose". I managed to get to the dwarf village by cheating, only to find out i would have to start all over again because i took the wrong path somewhere.

Aside from being boring and poorly designed, it's also a lazy product. There are no volume sliders, you can only turn music or effects on and off. Pressing escape in a menu doesn't close it but makes you exit the game. And for some bizarre reason you can't see what you're choosing in the menu that pops up because it obscures your cursor. Yeah, hard pass.

I assume this was re-released in 2013? Because there are reviews and the release date imply that... but from what I'm gathering, this is an updated version of the 1984 game based on the gamebook? The info I find about the 2013 release has a different release date than is here and doesn't clearly state whether it's an updated version of the 1984 game, or just 2 separate games. I'm learning toward it being 2 separate games both based on the Fighting Fantasy: Forest of Doom gamebook. Still, the reviews below make me think it could just be a rehashed version of the text adventure RPG hence the not-so-good reviews for a 2013 game ha. Hmmmm. Sounds like I'll have to play both and possibly create a 2nd database entry if needed
