When I fired up my Playdate and tried Whitewater Wipeout, I was kinda disappointed. It's not a poorly made game, but I found it uncomfortable to play on this size of device, and I have no nostalgia for California Games' Surfing to keep me going.
I was relieved when I started Casual Birder (the other game I can play until the next New Game Day), and experienced something completely different! Hooray!
This is a low-key, photo-taking RPG. It reminds me a lot of Toem, but with more of a Link's Awakening aesthetic in a present-day setting. It's got cartoony visuals, a boppin' soundtrack, and the game surfaces hints in a really organic way... it's exactly the sort of quirky, chill experience I want from a device like this.
This game surprised me, as I thought it would be much shorter, and surprised me with its tiny world full of details ! A really tiny number of birds were really tricky to understand how to get, I had to search for 2 of them if I recall. Its light humour works well, and the bird pixel art are a joy to discover ! It really does feel nice to walk around this sweat little bird world with those nice musics in the background.
Great little bite-sized bit of fun. Funny writing, good music, and an entertaining premise. The controls can be a little wooden, especially when you need to act fast, but it’s a lovely little jaunt.
An extremely fun & quick RPG/adventure game! It's also legitimately funny, which is rare.
