Excellent Turrican inspired Platform Shooting on Hardware that Delivers

Dreamcast is a great system that has some excellent arcade shooting games of all kinds. Dreamcast also, however has a lot of homebrew games and unofficial releases that were not published.. and sometimes these aren't so great. Well GunLord is apparently both of those so I didnt know exactly what I'd expect to get here.

The levels all look different. a lot of stuff in the game reminded me of Metroid.

The game isn't overly hard (at least at first) and the controls are decent enough to hit what you want in this scrolling platform shooter that plays and looks a lot like the classic Turrican. There are various gun options all of which were pretty cool. You get three hits until death makes you restart , fortunately its pretty easy to find health. Enemies dont respawn after you leave the area they are found on map (they don't come back. So this makes this kind of game a matter of sweeping levels clean (i like) and just not doing anything dangerous while doing it. you also have a few other really cool modes of attack (such as a bomb that you can just keep pressing?) and a rolling flamethrower ("Snake Beam") there's also a classic samus roll complete with bombs. this is a really powerful move b ecause you arent easily injured while doing it. Some bosses are easily defeated using some of these alternate methods of attack, which is what kinda makes this gun the most fun maybe. enter image description here
some really cool looking bosses. Although everything looks pretty cool in GunLord really.

It's a nice looking and sounding game. The soundtrack is completely original music that sounds like the sort of industrial-techno type game music you'd come across at the time.

GunLord is an excellent Run 'n Gun retroshooter with the benefits of awesome music, and absolutely no flicker to fully enjoy the smooth scrolling bullet-filled graphics of modern Sega arcade cabinet in the comfort of your own home.

I personally really enjoy this kind of shooter. It has the occasional (i think a total of 3) horizontal scrolling shooting (flying) segments, but they aren't too bad or a main focus of the game. It get ridiculously hard towards the end (the last boss is next to impossible but you do have one attack technique which will help you survive). It's only real fault though is something weird is going on with changing tracks. sometimes it will sit with many minutes of silence until you enter a different area that prompts to start the music again. Entering new areas can also force a track change which can pull you out of the immersion of blasting things up to a rather rockin' score
