Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright were never rivals per se, as they were investigative partners for the mysteries involving Labyrinthia. The "vs." part was used in an entirely different context, which I am glad, because it just didn't seem right to make Layton or Wright hate each other. It just really doesn't fit their personalities if they were die-hard rivals antagonising each other.
Layton and Luke were drawn the same way as their franchise. Even though it would have been cool to see what they would've looked as Ace Attorney characters, I suppose it would've looked weird and out of place if they did. And if all characters were drawn like Layton? Nah. The two different drawing concepts were alright.
I wasn't familiar with Phoenix's franchise. Even before then, I didn't know he existed. For one, no one in my area talked about him. So I was thrust into the world of lawyering. It was hard, but I managed. It was kind of cool, I felt like a devil's advocate. So now because I've played this game, I bought Phoenix's games, apart from the Miles Edgeworth spin-off.
