Growing Pains
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

Context

This game was created in the heydays of licensed games and I can say that it was a decent game. While it doesn't break new ground, it offers an enjoyable experience for fans of the beloved animated series.

The good

  • The teammate AI is competent. They will always focus on the boss and will engage with the gimmicks correctly, they can do the combos well and will always try to keep the heat off you.
  • The music is pretty decent, not very memorable but it’s there. They even have the theme song from the cartoon, the Amy and Yumi version, and the Larry version.
  • The characters have the voice actors from the cartoon and they do their job correctly. They convey emotions and land the jokes exactly as they should.
  • No Titan fights the same. Robin is fast and hits hard, Beast Boy is a bit slower but all his attacks have good range, Starfire is fast and hits like a truck with her combos or super attacks, Raven is like Starfire but with better combos focused on multiple targets, Cyborg is slow but he hits like a truck.

The bad

  • The game’s combo system sometimes doesn’t work. You …

The bad

  • The game’s combo system sometimes doesn’t work. You sometimes do the correct input but the combo won’t come out. I have had this happen several times and it makes you feel weird, you think you did the timing wrong but it’s just the game being finicky.
  • Hard mode is poorly balanced. The enemies will start blocking mid combo which is something you cannot do, they kill you in five hits and they take dozens upon dozens of blows to kill. Do not play it on hard or you will only suffer.
  • The characters in master of games are poorly balanced. Robin is crazy fast, Slade is stupidly slow, Trigon is crazy fast and hits like a truck, Beast Boy is way too slow to exploit the AI.

Conclusion

Teen Titans game is a surprisingly solid and enjoyable licensed title that respects its source material. Avoid hard mode, it’s nothing but pain.

For Hardcore Fans Only

This game is a faithful adaptation of the TV show, complete with the original voice actors. The writing is hilarious, and there is plenty of content for fans, including a 4-player fighting mode with most of the show's cast and production artwork.

Beyond these elements, however, the game is a mess. The gameplay requires little to no skill: simply button mash to attack and move out of the way when facing obstacles. This is especially evident when fighting some of the weaker enemies: all you have to do is hit them once and they're unable to break away from your button mashing. In addition, the dialogue would constantly loop, making the shallow gameplay even more unbearable.

I can only recommend this game to hardcore fans of the TV show. Without the abundance of Teen Titans content, the game would be worthless.
