Clunky, But Good Jingles And Cool "Ring Of Power" Mechanic Make It Worth Pushing Thru

Preliminary: Welp, I just got through the first Area and there's only 4 (good length, that felt long tbh), I barely survived the boss. I'm not sure why I'm not fully in love yet... there's a deliciously absurd concept, it's Konami, you can melee attack but also have the ring of power around you that was a lot of fun to play with. Maybe it was the surprisingly-clunky-for-arcade controls (tho that seems to be the norm in 87 for arcade games heh, I guess I expected too much), maybe the odd jump mechanic (tho I enjoyed it more with the ring of power thingy), or maybe the repetitive nature of that first level. Hopefully I get more into it as I move along! Oh, and the backgrounds have been great, the overall Look good, and the jingle at the end of the first Area was great. Dunno why I'm not loving it! Here goes nothing...

Look: 8/10 Good, effective UI. Great backgrounds. Beautiful ending screen. I can't claim I dwelled on any of it but good stuff.

Sound: 8/10 The final boss jingle was annoying, as was that level in general. It was trying to be glitchy and futuristic but …

Look: 8/10 Good, effective UI. Great backgrounds. Beautiful ending screen. I can't claim I dwelled on any of it but good stuff.

Sound: 8/10 The final boss jingle was annoying, as was that level in general. It was trying to be glitchy and futuristic but wasn't great. Otherwise I liked the Sound. And I lovvvvved the ending-of-areas jingle and the ending of the game jingle!

Play: 8/10 It seems the basic idea of each Area Boss so far (just started the 3rd Area of 4) is that they will get rid of your ring of power and you basically have to jump-attack. There's no strategywiki to reference nor a gamefaqs, so I made my own strategies like for the 2nd boss, I'd jump-attack then run to the other side, rinse repeat. Basically a war of attrition for both of them so far ha, then just rebuilding my ring of power in each level. I wish there were more variety to the levels, the 2nd Area had the same idea as the first just with a different background (the Sound and Look are good, fortunately). The jump seems very odd, I mostly got used to it but especially when fighting bosses you had a clunkier control system, probly on purpose like you're getting stunned?, but it was annoying either way. I learned that, during bosses only, I had to make an emphatic point to turn one way then wait then jump. Another oddity is the normal melee claw collision mask, not nearly as tight as I'd expect from an arcade game (tho again, you get used to it).

Feel: 8/10 Sure enough here I am pushing through the 3rd Area and it's the same enemies, just some different lines of them (the enemies are literally lined up in groups, and then you get the health/power-up balls if you kill the last one, do this for every line of enemies for every level until you get the ring of power, then have some fun till the boss. same format each area). Oh, I can't forget that during the 2nd phase something will be at the right edge of the screen seemingly spawning enemies? or just taunting you? And during the 2nd phase of each area there will be lasers and environmental things that can damage you even with ring of power, so be sure to jump a lot. Oh and those annoying blob thingies that exist even from the 1st phase of the 1st area, they can hit you through the ring of power and cannot be damaged. They're hard to notice and I did not like them as a mechanic. I suppose the 3rd area kinda changed it up by adding the challenge of more platforms during this phase, they must've known my technique of uh just basically jumping through the 2nd phase of areas to avoid the lasers and kill the enemies with ring of power before they can shoot again :-p I am grateful there is no time limit, tho it did remove the feeling of exigency sometimes, making me think why not just sit here and let the enemies come to me until I get the ring of power. And even after that, why not post up and collect the power-up balls before each "Attack Power" or "Jump Power" part (always after the 2nd section of an area you get that, turns out might as well had taken my time and collected a lot to help with the bosses, where the challenge mostly was).

Attachment: 8/10 Ironic that the 3rd Area boss was the easiest yet imo, just time your jump right and you might not even lose your ring of power, plus with any amount of Jump Power and timing your jump it's ezpz. Time for the final area! I still don't love it but I'm glad I pushed through. The good, tho not spectacular, Look helped, and definitely the ending jingle of each level helped too. Pro-tip: absolutely farm the final areas power up thingy before the end, it's the Beam Power and you need a lot of it. I ran out and had to rely on jump-attacks lol. It only needed a few more hits after I ran out tho. It was very clunky, which seems to be the name of the game, it seems it can only be hit even by the beam while going up or down? Didn't seem to be a specific spot, just touchy. Maybe the bottom of it? Not really sure. But I did it! And it had a great ending jingle, hiscore screen jingle, and ending screen! enter image description here
