Compared to DonPachi, DoDonPachi is generally known for introducing new gameplay elements while improving or changing existing ones. The overall background of the game, unlike following sequels, remains more or less centered around a supposed invasion by a mysterious race of mechanized aliens, which the player is called to face throughout its run. However, more sinister and shocking secrets lie beneath the surface, accessible only to those brave and skilled enough to clear the entire game.

Like DoDonPachi Resurrection, this is a game I would have ranked a few spots lower on my first tour through Cave’s catalogue of games, but one that I have definitely got more into over time. It has a really great feel with all the weapon options and some very satisfying enemy patterns to deal with. The easy availability of a great feeling version on the MiSTer has kept it in my rotation, at least when I don’t want to play Progear.

It's just more DonPachi, so it's good (but also kind of just feels like DLC bonus content). Shoot down all those helicopters and tanks, and dodge hundreds of bullets with each passing second. DonDonPachi is considered a formative shooter (or shmup) for the "bullet hell" subgenre, and as such is an interesting title to go back to (along with its predecessor DonPachi) to see some of the beginnings of screen-filling bullet patterns, forcing you to constantly "plan ahead" your plane's movements on the spot to weave through the extraordinary number of enemy projectiles. Luckily the PS1 version I played (on my Vita) includes the ability to slow things down, which is nice for chumps at shmups like myself. There's git gud games, and then there's games like DonDonPachi... and then there's this mad lad, who completed a 1CC (one coin clear) of the game with the Xbox 360 Kinect:
