Afflicted by severe amnesia, you drift deep into the Common Dream. You scour for the lost pages of the Necronomicon, while clinging on to any little purpose you have left. Faced with mad dreamers, horrible abominations and eldritch deities, you feel drawn to the dark Abyss deep within.

Gloom Review

A simplified 2D souls-like. Gameplay is a bit like Hollow Knight. You fight enemies in a random dungeon, room after room, and fight a boss at the end. Lots of weird items and secrets (like Binding of Isaac). Combat feels smooth and familiar, quite fast, lots of dodging. Difficulty is tough but fair. I haven't beaten it yet, but I'm hooked. Visuals and atmosphere are simple but really classy, lots of style, spooky atmosphere a little bit Bloodborne, lots of shadows and horrifying Lovecraft monsters. It's great stuff.

Sound track is also really good, boss themes get you pumped and excited, normal level themes are more quiet and eerie. The game clearly has a lot of deep lore (expressed through NPC dialogue and item descriptions) seemingly inspired by Cthulhu mythos. Enemies are really well-designed and look great: each enemy has attack patterns that must be memorised. There are many bosses, and (like Binding of Issac) the bosses you face will be randomised for each run. Bosses have phases and a bunch of different attacks.

The game also has item shops, different weapons and a blacksmith. You can upgrade your weapons, and weapons also put out more …

The game also has item shops, different weapons and a blacksmith. You can upgrade your weapons, and weapons also put out more damage depending on your stats. Your stats can also be upgraded. Though the central mechanic of the game is the items. Like Isaac, you are regularly rewarded with random items and they help to shape your build and play style; by the 4th area you might have as many as 10 or more items, each with their own interesting properties. During each 'room' you generally face off against 2 or 3 or more enemies, so learning to crowd control is important. HP and stamina bars work as normal. As you progress through the "dungeon levels" you find yourself in different environements: cathedral, forest, swamp, abyss, etc, plus more that I haven't found yet. It's tough and it has permadeath so after you lose all your HP you start over again with a new dungeon and without any of your items.

Overall this is a simplified 2D genre mashup and it works really well. Lots of class and style, smooth controls, and it's cheap on Steam. For anyone who likes this genre, stuff like Hollow Knight, Salt & Sanctuary, Bloodborne, Souls, or any action rogues (like Isaac) , you'll probably dig it. I think I've made it very close to the end of the game; looking forward to mastering my skills and beating this some day.
