This video game is based on the cartoon television series Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars under license from Hasbro, Inc. While it is generally classified as a scrolling fighting game, utilizing a Final Fight-esque landscape, the player's character is also armed with a laser gun, adding in elements of a scrolling shooter. Much like the cartoon, Bucky O'Hare features colorful animation, and voice actors from the series were hired to participate in the game's cut scenes. The player chooses from five protagonists: Bucky O'Hare, the heroic rabbit captain of the space ship Righteous Indignation; Jenny, an "Aldebaran cat" and telepath; Dead-Eye Duck, a four-armed mallard; Willy, a kid from earth that replaced their engineer, and Blinky, a one-eyed android. As in the television series, the characters must stop the Toad Empire from invading extraterrestrial planets and enslaving their peoples; to do so they must shoot their way through an army of brainwashed toads to destroy their evil leader, a computer program known as "Komplex" and release the "Interplanetary Life Force." The enemies, among them Al Negator, Toadborg, Total Terror Toad, a "Cyborg Spider", the various varieties of Toad Storm Troopers, the Toads' Air Marshall, and "Komplex-2-Go" who featured in the comic book and cartoon series continuities. If Battletoads and Mega Man 2 Had a Baby
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

Bucky O'Hare is a little known comic book that was turned into a cartoon show back in the early 90s. Unlike the Ninja Turtles, which made this transition with tremendous success, Bucky O'Hare disappeared with little fanfare. Maybe it had to do with syndicated cartoons being phased out around this time, or other action oriented cartoons like X-Men and Batman: The Animated Series took attention away from it, but regardless, it was around long enough to get an NES game.

The game, which has great graphics and music, is pretty rare. In it, you play as Bucky O'Hare, leader of the U.A.F. (United Animals Federation) who must rescue his crew from the evil clutches of the Toad Empire. You can select what stage you want to play, and each one features different puzzles and challenges to overcome, with a boss fight to end the level. Once you beat the boss, you will get a teammate, who you can use in stages moving forward. Each teammate has different abilities that can come in handy.

This game reminds me of Battletoads and Mega Man 2. It has a certain cheapness and frustration that takes me back to Battletoads. You will die A LOT, but the good news is unlike Battletoads, you have unlimited continues. The stage select and level layouts remind me of Mega Man 2. Things like blocks appearing and disappearing and obtaining new abilities with each level defeated are very much in the vein of Mega Man.

Overall, this game is fine. It's good for an NES game, but the high level of difficulty and frustration are a good reminder, at least it was to me, that NES games are starting to show their age, and increasingly are becoming harder for me to revisit.

Aaahhh-oooo-gaaaah! Bannana Oil!
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

The title above is a direct quote from the game and is as random and non-nonsensical as it reads. I love it: https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxgSGLTqfbJgLsTmdWbEHN_ynZB-s1Um79

This was a pretty bland arcade shooter that I loved as a kid growing up. I remember this being the first game I would run to after arriving at Chucky Cheese. Sadly the game hasn't aged well. It's still serviceable and I understand why I liked it as a kid. The character designs are very 90s in terms of aesthetics and very reminiscent of Street Sharks and TMNT. It turns out that this arcade is actually based off a cartoon that I never saw as a kid.

The first thing that makes this game feel bland is the lack of variety between the different playable characters. They all have the same exact attack. There's a mutant duck with four fucking arms and he still only uses a single hand gun... There's a robot with a giant cannon on his back, and likewise he only uses a hand gun... given each character a unique moveset and weapon would have gone a long way.

The next issue is the feedback you get from attacking enemies. It is either not …

It is either not present or over the top. Most enemies just kind of die without any interesting animations. The bosses, in contrast, are behemoth sponges for damage taking forever to kill. This makes your weapons seem like they hit like wet noodles. Yet you can also stun lock most of them which makes it possible to avoid most damage, but that's because they can't attack... you'll spend most boss fights standing in one spot, using your bomb to stun, then mindlessly mashing the shoot button. It's pretty boring as a result. The final boss shakes this up a bit by not being stunable, but it's still a pretty lame fight since you can stand in one spot and avoid all his attacks as you slowly whittle him down. Bombs are also weird in their feedback. Using it will eliminate most basic enemies on screen, but do little to mini-bosses and bosses (except stun them) which again doesn't give you any meaningful feedback. Health bars for the bosses and less health would have gone a long way.

The last issue is how this is a 2.5D shooter that is restricted to 2 directional shooting. Even Contra which came out years before, had 8-directional shooting. This further makes the gameplay feel bland. I get that 8-directional shooting is terrible with only one joy-stick, but there are 2-D sequences where you fly and you are still restricted to 2 directional shooting...

The writing and voice acting are horrendous but that didn't bother me. I actually found that to be the funnest part of the game. The sincere gibberish being spewed by characters. It makes it seem like the devs did a ton of acid, but their brains in a blender, then began work. A great case in point is the quote in the title of this review. I love it because it is so absurd and non-nonsensical. I just wish there were more ridiculous moments like it.

The graphics are pretty good for a 90s arcade. Certainly on par with TMNTs, Simpsons and X-men beat em ups. The sound design is pretty forgettable excluding the terrible voice acting which has a "so bad it's good" charm.

Overall, I probably will never play it again, but it was fun to make fun of it while playing it co-op with friends. Not a bad way to spend the night, just bring plenty of beer.

Good, But Difficult NES Platformer
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

Preliminary: I mean, the Look is outdated for 92, tho some of the backgrounds have been neat enough so far. The Sound and straightforward platforming Play are what might get me to push through this instead of just saying 2 or 3 star and moving on.

Welp I got through the Green Planet boss, sheesh that was tough. I'm enjoying the red planet tho, despite some of its brutalities, I like that there are no time limits and I am beginning to like the power-up system to increase your jump

Day 2

This is pretty brutally difficult, but I like hat the death mechanic lets you start back within the "Act" you died. Always felt learnable a la Castlevania, but only thanks to savestates once I got to my last life. I liked the simplicity of many of the puzzles just being "do you have a high enogh Power bar to jump that high?" haha. Tho I don't like that enemies respawn when you leave their space, making some of the One Ups and whatnot not feel great cuz then there were poorly designed situations to return to.

OMG bahaha just now realized you can switch characters that you've unlocked …

OMG bahaha just now realized you can switch characters that you've unlocked with Select >.< So I suppose those situations were valid. I dunno why people compare this to Megaman. I barely see the similarities... You have different characters, not merely different weapons/outfits. I suppose the similarity is that you can select which level you do? And you unlock things after each of those levels?

Omg the Blue Planet (ice level, you know how it goes) is so frustrating. I'm definitely starting to burn out in Act 6 of Blue Planet, but seems there isn't much left after the following planet. There is a huge delay in when you press up to shoot upward, but to me it is better than the Megamans I have played so far.

I keep debating about stopping but then push through. They are nice about where they place the Life-refillers, knowing their level designs I suppose heh. And tho the Look is subpar for 92, it's addictive nonetheless.

These gotcha moments are obnoxious not sure if this should be a 3 or 4 star despite how much fun I'm having with it, they are quite crass for those. Thank goodness for savestates. This Yellow Planet does keep surprising me, both with its neat space setting and its surprise gameplay elements, but dang would this be impossible without savestates. (Well, alternatively, hours and hours of replays to memorize these gotchas)

I am 100% sure I would not be able to beat this without savestates. Possibly not enjoy it either but I think I would in a SuperMarioWorld-supersecretarea-enjoy type of way.

I'll try this a bit more tomorrow but yea this Yellow Planet boss is just too hard. I read other reviews here and see that it only gets harder. I remind myself that, even with platformers, I do this backlog/project for fun not for challenge or clout or addiction. Tho addiction keeps playing a role in this nonetheless. So like I said, I'll give it another shot tomorrow but most likely a 3 star solid platformer that's too difficult to expect to beat, but worth playing for a fun little session before burning out.

Day 3

Yea it's way too hard lol. But a good game overall

Look: 7.5/10 Oddly alluring despite its dated NES Look

Sound: 8/10 "

Play: 7.5/10 Addictive straightforward platforming that gets too hard for me.

Feel: 7.5/10

Attachment: 7/10

Overall: 7.5/10

I had heard great things about this game before starting it. After completing it (using savestates in the final boss) I'm really having a hard time knowing if it's a good game or not. At times it reminded me a lot of Battletoads or Mega Man 2 with its traps that kill you in one hit, times that I certainly didn't enjoy.

It is a somewhat frustrating and sometimes unfair game. Play it more like a challenge than expecting to have a fun time.
