Normalcy1's review of Kirby's Avalanche
This review is for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version

Game #5/200 Kirby’s Avalanche is another nostalgic title for me and was quite the controller breaker when I was a kid. As a now 29-year-old man, I beat the game with relatively no difficulty in about an hour. Puyo Puyo is an OK puzzle formula in my opinion - far below Panel de Pon and Tetris. My main issue is that if you get a 3x combo (not super hard to pull off), you change the momentum so greatly that it’s difficult to lose. If you can nail a much harder 4x combo, you’ve basically won instantly. The same goes for getting two 3x combos in a row, which is my basic strategy in each match and what got me through the dismal campaign. More challenging opponents basically amounted to having to adapt to the game speed increase. It’s true that later opponents have greater accuracy, but it doesn’t amount to much if you can disrupt their combos early. I’m not super thrilled to play another Puyo title. The Kirby coat of paint was appealing; certainly the graphics were good and I liked all of the sprite work. But the music is incredibly repetitive, the voice acting embarrassing and laughable, …

But the music is incredibly repetitive, the voice acting embarrassing and laughable, and the cut scenes in between stages just boring. The writing is completely lacking in charm or wit. It comes across as a lazy title, but it’s okay for some arcade-y fun.

Kirby meets Puyo Puyo
This review is for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version

The fifth Kirby game ever released and the third spin-off game of the franchise, at this point there are more spin-off than mainline games, but thankfully Kirby's Dream Land 2 would be released the same year this was released. In this case, we have a Puyo Puyo reskin, just like the SEGA Genesis got Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. The reason they decided to shoehorn Kirby characters is that Nintendo of America didn't have enough confidence that a game like Puyo Puyo would sell in the West without a popular mascot in the cover, and Kirby got the honour.

Title screen

If you don't know, Puyo Puyo is basically a mix between Tetris and Dr. Mario, so instead of filling lines with blocks, you have to pair four blocks (or "blobs", like they are calle in this game) of the same color in order to delete them, and in the process you send garbage blobs to your opponent. The first player that get a full screen to the point that they can't put more blobs lose, just like in Tetris, and in this game you have to defeat 13 Kirby characters in order to win, or 16, if you count the three …

The first player that get a full screen to the point that they can't put more blobs lose, just like in Tetris, and in this game you have to defeat 13 Kirby characters in order to win, or 16, if you count the three stages of practice. You can also play with another human or play in a practice mode that is basically an endless version without opponents that ends as soon as your screen gets filled, so there is plenty to do.

The screen you'll see most of the game

Something unique in this version is that before starting the stages, Kirby has a conversation with the enemy, and they made Kirby pretty mean and sassy, which feels so out of place that it's actually pretty funny to read. This is also the only time in a game where Kirby speaks full sentences, and there are a lot of references to Kirby's Dream Land and Kirby Adventure, along voice samples that introduce all the characters, so there is a lot of effort behind the production, something that you wouldn't expect in a reskin of another game.

Maybe there is a reason Kirby doesn't speak in more games...

Now, regarding the difficulty, you'll need a lot of strategy, practice and mental agility to win. The stages become faster and faster to the point where you don't have any time to think, but you need to do a lot of combos in order to defeat the enemy before they fill your screen with garbage. This can be extremely frustrating and mind-numbing, so I wouldn't recommend complete the game in one sit, as you'll get mentally tired after a couple of levels. Fortunately, if you die you can retry the same stage right away, unlike Kirby's Dream Course where you needed to do 8 holes with only two lives, so you don't need to worry about losing your progress.

You'll probably see this screen more than times than you think, but at least you can always press start.

In conclusion, this game isn't revolutionary at all, and you can just play the original Puyo Puyo if you like the gameplay, but the Kirby theme is implemented very well, the dialogue is hilarious, and completing the main mode is a serious challenge, so I'd definitely recommend it if you like puzzle games à la Tetris and Kirby.

Kirby's Avalanche

It's just puyo puyo, but with kirby characters. That appeals to me a ton. This game also has a slight nostalgia boost for me, as I played it when I was a lot younger. It was one of the first puzzle games I learned, and it feels great to understand it more now that I'm older.

Kirby's dialogue in this is amazing, but why does it get soo fast. I made it to Paint Roller and I think my brain might be at my limit. Feels like it's melting trying to concentrate and keep up.

Beat on normal. The 1st few levels were easy but after that the game became obnoxiously difficult. Had to lower the frames per second to 10, save state almost every turn and keep a string of backup states. Many times I had to start a level over or go back to a previous state and do something different. The AI is damn good at this game. Maybe I needed to focus more on building up combos instead of clearing stuff ASAP. It was a decent game but not sure if I could handle Hard mode.
