4/5

We're back. Battefield 3 was a very important game for me and this harkens back to that era. Great gun mechanics, fun online, beautiful graphics and runs like a dream. The maps could do with some work and some huge ones would be fun to play on. Redsec is not really my thing unfortunately. Hope they continue with some great DLC for this one.

The Excitement Wears Off Fast with Battlefield 6
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Battlefield 6 dazzles you with the image of having all of these traits that a great game has. It has multiple maps, pretty graphics, a good variety of match types, tons of guns and attachments to unlock, yada yada you know the drill.

Where I struggle to recommend Battlefield is a ton of little issues that add up to a substantial amount of flaws. Guns and attachments take a comically absurd number of hours of gameplay to unlock. Even months after release, many maps still have exploits that allow players to get onto rooftops where they're not supposed to have access. The assault class's Stim ability is so useless that it's actually bad to use it most of the time. In most matches, you'll die within 2 seconds of having spawned at least once. Shortly after release, EA shoved a Battle Pass into the game, and they constantly harass you to buy the paid tier. Also, it's minor, but the campaign is just dogshit.

The thing that really puts it over the line for me is that the game is still crashing for me. This is the only triple-AAA game that regularly crashes on my PC - I'd estimate one …

The thing that really puts it over the line for me is that the game is still crashing for me. This is the only triple-AAA game that regularly crashes on my PC - I'd estimate one every 1-3 hours of gameplay. It's extremely frustrating to be booted to desktop over and over, especially when the match lengths are often 30-40 minutes.

There's really a lot of great things about Battlefield 6 that I do want to praise. The gunplay feels great. The classes feel like they have unique purposes and niches. The match sizes aren't as massive as prior Battlefield games, but I actually really enjoy the current map and player count sizes. When you're able to enjoy the game for what it is, it feels like a 8 or 9 out of 10 game. Unfortunately, you'll feel yourself get pulled out of that high over and over.

I give Battlefield 6 an "Eh, I guess".

Could be a solid 4 star.

But they didn't put too much effort to it.

Enjoyable tho.

A Ramble, but only barely a Review

Although I'm currently marking it at a 4/5 stars, it really could be a 3 and it certainly sits somewhere in between. I don't know if I'll ever fully review it, but after about 60 hours I do want to note a couple of things.

  • I don't hate the battle pass (And full disclosure I did buy season 1), but I'm not sure it is worth it either in its current condition. I ultimately tie a games overall price and fun when calculating value aiming for 1 hour of play per $1 spent. Sure, I make exceptions for some extremely fun games that take 10 hours while simultaneously costing $60, but for the most part I stick to that metric. I spent hundreds of dollars on World of Tanks back when I played it, but I also put in hundreds of hours. Anyways, I like having objectives to do and things to earn in these games besides trying to just win every match. Especially when so many matches can go completely lopsided. I am though not fully convinced that the base game shouldn't cost less if they intend on releasing battle passes and seasons …

Anyways, I like having objectives to do and things to earn in these games besides trying to just win every match. Especially when so many matches can go completely lopsided. I am though not fully convinced that the base game shouldn't cost less if they intend on releasing battle passes and seasons without including something more in those packages and some cosmetic items are just not worth it.
  • Please fix custom load outs. Not only should we get several of them, we should be able to name them as well. Let me create Assault - Close Range - BOOM Focused.
  • Still a high percent of matches are lopsided, but anecdotally the percent feels less than other battlefield games I've played. I've even seen a number of games where things went very wrong very early, and things were pulled back because the losing team really focused on objectives, while the winning team just switched to a kill to death focus or over stretched to try and spawn camp.
  • I think the problem from earlier battlefield games (looking at you battlefield one) of having challenges that frequently don't contribute to playing the team game laid out in front of you have been mostly rectified. Yes, I hate playing with a sniper rifle as a recon. It's to slow to make you an effective objective taking recon class and you light up like a Christmas tree whenever you even look longingly at the scope. So yes, sniper rifle challenges annoy me. But they are still much better than BF One going (Get 25 handgun kills as recon class). Like okay, I'm just ineffective for a couple of games.
  • Other notable complaints. I HATE THE INCENDIARY SHOTGUN. SMOKE ASSISTS NEED TO INCLUDE REVIVING IN FUCKING SMOKE.

OKAY, I'M GOING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT MAPS NOW.

  • Some maps are VERY one sided, as in, the team with the good side seems to (nearly) always win, on some maps, always win handedly.
  • Some maps are plain bad. And due to their design or lack there of, they encourage some battlefield sins.
    • For example, a certain map with oil refineries. Has so little cover, it gets filled with snipers. Not just recons, but tank snipers as well.
    • Another certain map with a massive mountain in the middle (which ironically has an out of bounds near the top, but not all around it, get's players filled with snipers that have a pretty good advantage of also requiring you to go out of your way to kill them. This map is also overly designed to give advantages to aircraft. I've found this map to be a worst offender when it comes to lopsided victories. Attack helicopter pilots going 60-0 is a frequent occurrence because it is almost sculpted to let the ace combat pilots go nuts the entire game (not ace as in good, ace as in, I played that shitty Ace Combat where the helicopters could barrel roll), with very little chance of being shot down. Removing aircraft seems to be the only way to fix this map. Honestly, the map is small enough, all vehicles except the jeeps and 4 wheelers should go.
    • Other maps where teams can camp rooftops where the only access is to highjack a helicopter and bail onto it makes these squads annoying. Sometimes they will lopsidedly contribute to a win since they can be hardened in place and functionally impossible to remove because of a deploy becon and squad play. Not in a good way though, just in a way that requires a counter squad to fully focus on their removal and ultimately 8 people not playing objectives. Nothing any of these players have done wrong, just the reality of the map design not having taken that into consideration. On the other side, these same players may overwhelmingly contribute to a loss if their only focus becomes k/d. That's not punishing those players, that punishing the entire team. Again, if the map is smaller, maybe just remove aircraft.
    • Again, map design seems to be lacking on a lot of maps. They don't consider if they are overly pushing certain classes or vehicle abuses. The great thing about battlefield is everything should have an effective counter, and, on some maps, the only effective counter is overly committing to certain classes or vehicle abuses and everyone hating being on that map.
  • I'd like to see greater attention paid to which maps get access to which vehicles, focusing on making sure that they are setup in a way that rewards good group play and not manipulation of the games rules. For instance, a tank supported by infantry should be a very good force that's difficult to combat, but a tank sitting on the edge of the map all alone should be an easy target. Stealing and immediately crashing an aircraft so that you can take a rooftop should be punishing to the team's chances to win. Sure a good attack helicopter might be able to dominate an area where they have no engineers with counter AA missiles, but once the AA fire shows up the helicopter shouldn't be able to smack the ground at near full velocity into the conveniently placed ravine, survive, and get back its full health an unlimited supply of countermeasures (the unlimited supply of countermeasures is especially egregious when you realize how long it takes infantry classes to get things out of supply bags, especially counter vehicle ammo, MAKE THEM RETURN TO A BASE AND SIT AND WAIT FOR RESUPPLY).
  • Aircraft should have to maneuver and it should be hard. Letting them basically run through power lines on some maps, or making them over responsive, or being forgiving when they slam into the ground might be making them too effective.
  • The out of bounds timers should get less the further out you go from the map. Sure if infantry steps slightly out of bounds, they should have ample time to return. If a pilot lands well outside of the map, they shouldn't be able to get out repair, get in, get out again and fully repair. Make them return to a a safe location in bounds for that. I'm not even opposed to limiting vehicle ammunition so that they have to resupply either at a given location or via the supply drop from the engineer. While simultaneously increasing vehicle spawn timers so that getting yourself destroyed is not a faster resupply. This should be balanced so vehicles stay fun, but not allow them to be an unsupported killing machine that can't be countered because they don't come near the objectives.

Conclusion

I've spent too much time ranting about a game that's probably going to become more call of duty like rather than less. Yes, I'd love to see us get back to the day of a battlefield that was less flexible in class and vehicles because there were less of them and being exception required not only being good, but having good support (such as team restriction on class numbers).

These types of limits may not solve battlefields declining player base though, and unfortunately the more accessible approach is probably more appealing to a wider audience, which is more important than a well-balanced game that focuses on the teams strength rather than the individuals.

Remember, games like MAG (back when it was there) had a better focus on the grand team with higher numbers of players and a structured chain of command approach, opening up more options the further along the game ran. It was more limited in its development and was locked to the PS3 ultimately leading to its demise. I'd love to see Battlefield inspire to be a better MAG than a better Call of Duty. but I don't think that is its future.

At the end of the day, I can't think of another FPS multiplayer game on the market right now, with a decent player base, that would be better to play. So if you like FPS gaming, and you like the large battles focused on taking objectives, I think this is where you should spend your time and money (I'm not a battle royale player so I'm not going to touch that mode). I will continue to play this game, and I'm cautiously excited for season 2.

So far season 2 feels like a 3/5 for me. I've played a bunch, but only had the new map pop in rotation 1. It seems fun, but will need more play to experience it more. The issues players had with the game all firmly remain and after nearly 150 hours, I can confidently say they probably won't fix them. Some of the highlights of shit that needs fixed are:

  • There's a glitch with sniper rifles where occasionally they pop out to 1x zoom. Ignore anyone complaining about this aspect. If you hit the zoom key, all of a sudden you will get super zoom. It is way overpowered and a glitch that needs fixing ASAP.
  • Random graphical glitches on some maps where the game all of a sudden looks like someone smeared their KY jelly over my monitor.
  • Battlefield is no stranger to map balance problems and VI is no different. However, because EA has sterilized the game to an extreme extent, it's not as much fun. It's not the imbalance of just having an inferior spawn point that rewards you for overcoming it, it's the turd sandwich of never being able to keep your "easy" points. I can …

I can typically tell how bad a game is going to go based on which side of the map I'm on and the players instant response. The most broken ones are easy to spot too, if you have the side of the map that has an easily takeable spawn close to HQ, you're probably going to lose. This is especially true on Manhattan Bridge. Some sides have way more places to hide squad spawners than other sides. It really is that simple.
  • Recon class isn't the problem with snipers, it's the fact that there is virtually no penalty for dancing around like a coked-up clown. There needs to be significantly more movement penalty for higher zoom levels and jumping around. I know this because I abuse it like everyone else.
  • Assault class has some of the best gadgets, but its special ability doesn't do anything.
  • There's something funky with the net code, but that's all fps online games. Just still sucks to shoot someone point blank with a shot gun, hear the hit tick, then they destroy you with an smg and you realize you did 0 damage.
  • I think a lot of what feels like cheating is simply that EA doesn't know how to make characters face the way they are facing. This is especially noticeable if you've ever flown a recon drone and you've watched someone shoot bullets out of the tops of their hands. I've also approached in someone's blind spot for them to only snap to me and shoot me quickly. I don't think the in-game character models always appropriately reflect character facing.
  • We need the return of the pilot class. If you choose to fly, you should get handicapped by the pilot class. A class that all your pilot specials are tied to, but it only gets a basic gun and no real infantry equipment. Help prevent people from using the helicopters and jets as one way travel because they want to be on a rooftop or plant a spwaner on the otherside of the map.

Anyways, probably the last time I'll gripe on battlefield vi. I really need to go play something else. I still have fun, but it's definitely starting to wear on me.

I'm reasonably assured EA has secretly screwed with the back end of Battlefield VI to try and force matches to be closer. I would hazard there is a weighted calculation of ticket reduction in the late game that doesn't match the rest of the curve. Blow outs are no fun, but they're honest. We're still seeing the occasional blow out, but I'm now seeing a lot of matches where a 200 - 400 ticket lead is just evaporating, and the matches are ending within tens of tickets. It's happening so often now, there's no way its a coincidence. If they announced such a system, I apologize for missing it, but it feels like a shady mechanic hidden in the back end to make games feel close.

I did what I just said I wouldn't do, and I bought Battlefield VI. I know. Shame on me. I got it on sale. Unfortunately, there's just nothing else that currently lives up to Battlefield. Although, in my opinion, the jury on multiplayer is still out, I had a much better second night on multiplayer. I will probably eventually give full thoughts on that when I've had more time with it, for now let me just comment on the campaign.

I overall found it to be a decent training wheels, extended, hand-holding, learning experience when it comes to controls (although they had no vehicles of flight) and it does help one get a feel for the game. It let's you experiment with several weapons and gadgets and fine tune your graphics settings on the fly, which I really needed to do thanks to my aging 3080 being paired with a 4k tv and a (albeit well optimized) heavy modern game.

The story, however, is your typical glorification of the military with less "Tom Clancy" and more "Chief Wiggum Clancy". An insufferable plot, full of holes, flat characters, and unenthusiastic dialogue. I'm not going to overly ding battlefield 6 for this, …

I'm not going to overly ding battlefield 6 for this, because no one is here for the story, but a little effort would have gone a long way. I think about things like Call of Duty, a curse in the Battlefield world, and how I hate their multiplayer, but typically enjoy their story and will occasionally binge on a sale just to play through it, where here, I can fully recommend never doing that. If you're not here for multiplayer, stay far, far away.

My favorite part was the graphical glitch (or feature) I got early on where the cinema was showing me flying away in a helicopter, while a blackhawk (parked on the ground) playfully engaged two enemy tanks, while they just shot at each other during my flyover.

I'm left with the thought that the DEVs are so close to producing a truly wonderful single player experience, but they just don't commit to it. The squad based special forces military p*rn could be a niche that hasn't been properly filled since SOCOM Navy SEALs. Instead we get a half-arsed plot accompied by a 5 hour tutorial with glitches, bugs, and an overly aggressive "out-of-bounds" clock.

I bought this game because my brothers in law wanted to play. This is my first competitive shooter since Halo Reach. I am getting smoked. Any tips on how to get good? It doesn't feel like playing a lot is actually that helpful.

  • Am I dumb to play controller on the PC? I like controller controls better, but I get that I could aim faster if I learned M+K

I played the Battlefield 6 demo for one night, and I'm reasonably convinced EA has fudged it up.... AGAIN. I see a lot of good and potentially fun in battlefield 6, but I also don't feel like I'm playing a true BATTLEFIELD game. The level design, the map size seems to be designed to enhance chaos and dilute tactics in favor of quick run and gun gameplay.

Insert look how they massacred my boy gif

It felt more like a call of duty title on a slightly larger map than a battlefield title where squads could take advantage of coordination and cooperation. Coordinating with a squad to take an objective or working with a buddy to hold an objective felt impossible. The maps do not support squad-based team play in my opinion. They are designed for the mass of people to move point to point. The capture points were so close on the map that we were constantly trying to defend against a team that felt like they could basically spawn directly on the next objective. They've basically traded classes for loadouts, which actually seems to work.

The game seems to favor the whole team approach over the squad in a bigger battle approach. It just didn't feel like Battlefield. Unfortunately, I don't think the game is worth the price of admission at this time, so I won't be experiencing the full game.

I've never been a Battlefield person at all, but I'd say Call of Duty (my usual preference) and shooters as a whole are in a place where a little something different for me is welcome, and this game was well-timed as it received a lot of praise from its fanbase and feels like a nice polished and customer-friendly package to jump into. I don't think this will replace my interest in CoD, but I have been generally enjoying it. Feels nice moment-to-moment, and there's something to its implementation of a large-team format broken into smaller squads that can more directly support one another which does work well. I definitely have a feeling of being somewhat lost and useless to my team sometimes as I slowly get used to how you're supposed to play this on top of "learning" maps (I haven't actually learned much yet). I find it pretty fun shooting from a tank and would like to try out flying a plane since I am a fan of some flight games. I got ill on the day of the launch so I've sort of been playing this in a daze-like state but t's been fun so far... I think?

I'm not usually one for day 1 purchases when it comes to FPS games, if anything I've grown out of them the older I get, but since the Bad Company 2 days in 2009 I've really enjoyed the sandbox features and all the toys and gadgets at your disposal in the battlefield titles.

There's lots of explosions, lots of screen shaking, and at times I probably look like I'm spinning around looking for my mum in the middle of a warzone. Loving the vehicles and the drag revive feature! Just wish there were bigger maps which is what the franchise is typically known for.

Had some good games this weekend including the closest possible Conquest game you can have (each team starts with 999 tickets):

BF6 is fun overall with a few flaws. Some maps encourage toxic camping, the shotgun is a one-shot kill and giving C4 to the Recon class can make urban maps awful, especially for vehicles.

While i did get pretty bad at BF due to not playing it since BF4 8 years ago, i did get a couple of good finishes with #2 being my highest rank:

NB: There is a free beta this weekend and next weekend. It's only 39GB too. However, you do need to log in to an EA account even when installing through Steam. You also have to go to your BIOS and enable Secure Boot. I had to wait about 10 minutes in queue too (160K+ waiting, but it went fast).

Just played the beta for 2,5 hours. I have only played BF 3&4 previously. This feels like basically the same game but with more destructible environments. Also any class can use any weapon and they've shuffled things around a bit. E.g. the support is now the medic. Overall, pretty good. Got a couple of sweet kills with the default rocket launcer, which was my favourite weapon in BF4, lol.

I haven't played many of the beta testing for many of the battlefield games. Just 3, 2042, and now 6. So far it’s shaping up to be a good game. It looks good and feels good. The only thing I’ve noticed in my 5 or so matches is first person view when flying helicopters is absolutely horrendous. Just hoping on full release it lives up to what they’ve shown so far.
