"That's gotta feel good!" the announcer exclaimed. And he was right.

Space Invaders is a classic among classics. I've played it a few times over the years of course, the same way anyone has... It's not really one that has clicked with me like, say, Pac-Man. Space Invaders is a classic among classics. I've played it a few times over the years of course, the same way anyone has... It's not really one that has clicked with me like, say, Pac-Man. But gotta give credit where it's due -- it was one of the foundational video games for... all video games, lol.

In 2007 Namco released a game called Pac-Man Championship Edition, which made Pac-Man wild and crazy, fast and frantic, look cool, and have cool electronic music. In 2008, Taito did the same sort of thing with Space Invaders Extreme, releasing it on DS, PSP, and Xbox Live Arcade. (It was recently re-released as part of the Space Invaders Invincible Collection on Switch and PS4... And is also part of a smaller collection of games called Space Invaders Forever... very odd.) A sequel for Extreme came out on the DS only in 2009, and there it has remained... Perhaps understandable when it makes full use of both screens.

On to the review... Space Invaders Extreme 2 absolutely rules. It's the sort of game where I want to tell everyone to play it, because it's the sort of game you'll only "get" if you actually play it. It's wild and crazy, fast and frantic, looks cool, and has cool electronic music. But add a very before each of those words. It's so damn good.

Have you played Tetris Effect? This is like that, but for Space Invaders. Each bullet you fire somehow fits with the music playing perfectly. I just can't help but headbang to some of these tunes, even while playing. Such a great soundtrack!!! It's one of my new favorite video game soundtracks, without a doubt. And it feels amazing to take down so many of those aliens and UFOs with all those power-ups you get... And it feels even more amazing to lay waste to even more hordes of them in fever time... And it feels even more amazing to get a "bingo" and REALLY start racking up the points big-time!!!

This is perhaps a game where presentation is everything, and Space Invaders Extreme 2 knocks it out of the park. I love the music, I love the visuals, and I love how they mesh together so perfectly. I feel like I felt when discovering Rez for the first time... but even better. Trust me when I say, if you can play this game, and get good at it? Your soul will ascend into the aether.

I'm gonna have to add this to my hidden gems list... And I'm gonna have to look into picking up one of those Space Invader collections so I can play the first Extreme too.
