Decent combat-focused Metroidvania

Solateria is one of the only parry-focused Metroidvanias I’ve enjoyed. I had a decent enough time, but I think it’s a bit bland and uninspired (especially in the level design).

Solateria is one of the only parry-focused Metroidvanias I’ve enjoyed. I had a decent enough time, but I think it’s a bit bland and uninspired (especially in the level design).

The game is somewhat generic - yet another Hollow Knight derivative where a land has been hit with a plague and you are the one hope. The game is quite large, taking me about 50 hours to get near 100% completion. But my biggest gripe is the level design, as it is a ton of flat ground filled with enemies (again, it is a combat focused Metroidvania so it is filling the same shoes as a Castlevania type game). The platforming is nearly non-existent; you are mostly going to be killing enemies while you’re exploring. The rooms are also not very packed with secrets, so almost every room is a ton of empty space, flat ground, and just filled with enemies and maybe one collectible.

But luckily, I did enjoy the combat somewhat. The controls and movement feel good, and the art style and overall world design is competent. It’s just not really my type of game, I much prefer platforming and high-variety in the room designs and layouts. But if you’re a castlevania fan, you’ll probably enjoy it quite a bit,

6.7/10
