Excellent Spider-Man game for its time. *

This review is for the Spider-Man - Sega Mega Drive/Genesis - United States (1991) release

I was all about this game as an adolescent. It was one of the first Spider-Man games that actually made me feel like I was actually playing the wallcrawler, with a range of his abilities at my disposal. Players can web swing, wall crawl, fire web shots, punch, kick... it was one of the (if not THE) first times I felt like I had control of Spider-Man, and it wasn't just some dude in a Spidey skin.

As a side scroller, I won't proclaim this the best Spider-Man game, but I think an argument could be made that this was one of the first good ones. The graphics were clearly based on Erik Larsen's comic book art, which was timely, and it really does feel like a 2D comic come to life. The play control is pretty good, and I actually loved the photography mechanical through which you could earn money for more web fluid.

It's a pretty easy game if you've familiarized yourself with the level designs and how the enemies fight, as well as how Spidey himself moves and fights, but learning all of that is what takes the lion's share of your time. I replayed it during a live stream (on an emulator, my Genesis is long lost to time), and I think I was able to beat it during that 2-3 hour time span.

In fact, here's the live stream in question!

Hm, so this already existed as an entry but seems like it was also merged in the Master System/Game Gear entry. I was trying to avoid cleaning up the entries but seems I will have to :-p
