The Game Boy version offers the option to play as Ramius or the convoy commander of the Soviet Navy. It has eight stages, beginning in Greenland and ending on the Western Seaboard of the United States. The fifth stage shows Greek architecture, an Easter egg where the lost city of Atlantis has been unknowingly discovered. As the convoy commander, the player's mission is to sink the Red October, sparing no expense.

I had a bit of trouble on the 2nd level because the game does not clearly describe your objectives and I ran out of the one type of missile that can hit land which causes automatic mission fail. The infinite enemies were very annoying and made the objectives of "defeat all enemy forces" even more confusing. Ok so you mean the special enemy that is set as the boss of the level and not the infinite minions?

I enjoyed the core gameplay. Being able to freely travel throughout each level and turn around to backtrack is a nice change of pace from the autoscrolling shooters. This game is a bit slower and more tactical and I liked selecting the proper projectile to best take advantage of the enemy position, which also had very good controls. This game could have been a masterpiece with better level design (no enemy respawn, clearer objectives, more varied objectives) and a better story; either by actually following the source material or dropping it and making it a standalone IP. As it stands, the game might as well be called "Sub Hunt" because it has absolutely nothing to do with the movie or …
