Hellnight (Dark Messiah in Japan) is a survival horror game at heart, although it has no combat gameplay. Controlling the nameless hero, the player must travel through the underground and protect Naomi. There is only one monster in the whole game, the "creature" itself, which is invulnerable and cannot be killed. Instead players are constantly on the run from it, making sure it does not catch them. The game is divided into large maze-like levels, each one usually populated by the creature who keeps pursuing the player (although he does change form after each level). Middling Experience, Unique Potential
This review is for the PlayStation version

Interesting and unique in terms of concept and aesthetics, but lacking strongly in gameplay variance and depth.

This is a game I can respect, but the gameplay loop quickly became mind numbing, with boring puzzles and an inelegant map system that I started using a walkthrough 3/4ths in. The final quarter is actually quite cool, and realizing I wasn't making any progress and continuously looping in the non Euclidian spaces was uneasy, the game broke its own rules. Unfortunately by that time I was using fast forwarding and watching YT videos in the background and had all but completely checked out. The last quarter also has a plot info text dump which was really poorly paced and lands flat on its face if you aren't fully invested. That said, for a game that predates the first Silent Hill, I am reasonably impressed with what was managed.

Ideally this is the kind of experience that gets remade or has something spiritually succeeding it, but if you really love the survival horror genre, and have more patience than my zoomer brain does, you could actually fall in love with this game. I've played worse, and the first and final segments if nothing …
