This game marks the first FPS game I'm reviewing on my curator. Always a surprise what the next game I showcase brings. Mercs Fully Loaded is a third person FPS in its (at time of writing) early access, but not as you expect. A FPS where instead of being a human shooting other humans, you're a robot shooting mutations and other robots. Kind off like what Call of Duty Advanced Warfare could have been (it was still great though!). Play singleplayer with countless quests, with presumably more to be added soon, that contribute to the game's story. Not just that, multiplayer co-op exists too! And here is the best part: as unexpected from typical Indie games, this game got a huge detailed map. No illusions or invisible walls practice to disappoint the player. An actual detailed large free roam map. Not just one but multiple. Jump into various beautiful battle arenas with your friends fighting the AI (which is actually pretty good) or each other. An actual detailed large free roam map. Not just one but multiple. Jump into various beautiful battle arenas with your friends fighting the AI (which is actually pretty good) or each other. I tested the battle arena with a friend and it works perfectly with no noticeable lag or other issues. Hours of fun essentially! At this point you even forget it's an indie and not AAA game. A rare sight in the Indie industry.
All good? Here it gets tricky: this game packs some heavy graphics. Sorry potato computers, this will be a hard one to enjoy. Having tested various graphic settings, maxing everything even brings my trusty GTX 1660 SUPER to 70 degrees. Wouldn't want to imagine a worse GPU. However don't worry, the lowest settings basically made my GPU work at idle of around 40 degrees, rarely reaching 50. If you have a trustworthy GPU, this game is beautiful with its crispy graphics. Another rare practice for Indie games, which run on less GPU intensive (and hence, worse) graphics. The coloring and shading are also perfect as not to be distracting but also prevent the game from being too dark. Did I forget to mention the music? You can find various songs around the map and develop them (a feature of this game - more to it for you to find out). I rarely listen to music but these songs were pretty sweet. Like the perfect adrenaline booster and background noise while you are enjoying yourself in the arena.
Lastly, the arguably most important part of all my reviews everyone wants to know: Is the game worth it? To answer this, keep in mind this game is in early access. So ONLY if you are ready to encounter glitches or see your favorite feature missing, it could be. This game got a sweet tutorial, (currently) short logical game story and tons of things to explore beyond battle arenas: there are even 3 arcade games! Let's not get distracted now, what glitches exist? First, don't use a controller. Those aren't optimized from my testing and prevent the keyboard from working. Don't worry, FPS with a mouse isn't as scary as it sounds. Secondly, there isn't a confirmation to go to the main menu and with the short menu lag it's possible to accidentally leave your progress if you're impatient. Thirdly, as just a recommendation it would be nice if the developers permit for online server play in their battle arena against random players. Friends aren't always available, and AI can get boring. If you are ready to take these matters into account and be patient until the full bug free experience is available, this game is totally worth it. Now go on soldier and restore Mercs-HQ to its former glory!
