My most anticipated game of the year! (Probably.) Love Pocky and Rocky. From what I understand this is a sort of Sonic Mania style of sequel. A new game, but obviously revisiting a lot of material from the past ones. It's looking great.

Just finished another playthrough of Pocky and Rocky. (With lots of save states.) Still a classic. Love all the characters and enemies, and the gameplay is excellent. Fun graphics, fun music. Unfortunately the SNES does struggle to keep things smooth when things get too hectic, which seems to be an issue with a lot of shooters for that system. And yeah, it's tough as hell lol. I have good memories playing through it with a friend on a SNES with Game Genie codes.

I would love to see a re-release of this game, similar to what has been done with Wild Guns and Ninja Warriors. It'd be fantastic to get this one running without slowdown...

In the meantime, I need to give Pocky and Rocky 2 a try some time. I've never actually played it.

The fact that most levels do not scroll automatically is a great feature that I wish more games like this used. I preferred the standard card attack over the fire because of spread. Only thing I did not really like was that bosses took too long to defeat (probably due to Hard difficulty).

There was a lot of love that went into Pocky and Rocky - featuring an adorable and colorful little story with gameplay that seems clunky at first but actually has some tightly wound design into it, this game is something special.

Given a priestess and her tanuki friend, the game features co-op multi-directional scrolling while shooting up any spooky youkai or goblins in sight. Given a pair of upgradable shots and a short-range attack that can deflect small projectiles, the characters make up for their slow movements by a quick way to block certain shots to make their way through hordes of enemies. There's also a fair amount of bombs to clear the area and an evasion jump that can be used to get past larger attacks.

For six levels, the game is surprisingly expansive, with levels that are timed to last fairly long for shmup stages and allows movement that feels alert but careful, making sure that the player never rushes into territory and goes at their own pace.

With co-op, this game is a fantastic treat to play with friends, making this fairly difficult shmup a battle of teamwork and a balanced set of moves to handle kappa, pirates, octopi, and whatever else comes your way -
