Very Unique Platformer That Gets Old And A Little Too Difficult
This review is for the Vectrex version

Look: 9/10 Wow, really surprised with this one. Jumped in think it'd be another silly action game I'd play for a few and move on, but this was very unique. At first I was worried: oh boy, another isometric game, I usually can't get into those. But wow, right after thinking that, the first level loaded and I was fascinated by the Look.

Sound: 6/10 Pretty awful, at least my audio (the video I found seemed a bit better audio), but I do like when early games attempted synthesized voices heh.

Play: 7/10 Tight, smooth controls (surprisingly). And tho the collision masks of attacking enemies is forgiving, their damage collision masks match it--point being, they can hurt you even when you haven't touched yet, just like you can kick them even if you weren't quite spot-on. I really like this Vectrex system so far: gives me that true console feel with a relatively simple amount of buttons, but enough to allow for a left kick, right kick, jump, and move-ladder function. Short version of the gameplay: get Molly's bows (the key looking things) so you can leave our the jail-bar-looking things that appear near the top of each level. Hit …

Hit or avoid enemies, of course, and don't fall down the endless pit. Oh, and you somehow can make the ladder move to different spots and can climb up or down it. And in case you're wondering, unlike all those irritating microcomputer platformers that seemed to take pride in this, you don't arbitrarily die from falling one platform to another--which can help when you gotta get away quickly. Very fun for an early platformer tbh.

Feel: 8/10 Glad to see I am not alone in finding the game difficult heh: I don't see any playthroughs online that actually get to this alleged boss room. Still, the fact there is a final level/boss is awesome; I always appreciate action games with an end goal. To me, it felt like the levels were just repeating after a certain point, with faster and faster enemies. I probably could have tried again and gotten further, but despite finding this very interesting and a breath of fresh air, just not enough to start from the beginning again.

Attachment: 7/10 Tho I don't have the attachment that true Vectrex fans seem to, I could see how this fella became a bit of a mascot. Such a unique Look to it, and makes great use of these simple b&w vector graphics. It felt alive and unique, and each enemy was recognizable. I very well may return to this despite its difficulty and the feeling that it started just repeating the same basic levels, that's probly most attestable to the fact there is an end goal (allegedly) which always makes me want to return to get further, but also to its great Look and contemporarily-amazing Play. Not sure when I will be returning to Vectrex games, heh, but I can't deny I would like to get to the end.

Completion: Hard to tell what level I was on, but Score 14,700 Playtime: ~30 mins
