I played this for about a dozen hours on a steam free trial. I beat the first four levels on Normal and only had a bit of trouble at the very end of the fourth one. I used Valeria for my hero and spent the first couple of levels learning how to play. I did not read the guide and just dived in. The game is actually very well made and fairly easy to learn with great depth.
My strategy was getting a gold and wood economy going and relying on the hero by herself to defend the base as I scouted around to use battle standards to claim territory for resources and access to chokepoints for walls. Then I would build walls all around the base. Then I would train 4 javelins and built towers for them at the walls as needed. The hero would also go outside and kill neutral monsters between waves.
With that decent defense going I would focus on economy by researching economics and building a Marketplace. Then I would research food for Farms and upgraded gold production. Then I went for Archers and made 3 squads of 4 archers over the course of a level and rotated them between the walls as necessary, even building extra Towers for them. But this is why I had trouble in the fourth level; the enemy had a lot of heavy infantry that were strong against ranged. I did try out a bit of light and heavy cavalry for taking out enemy Siege units but I did not use melee, Magic or automated Towers. Definitely need to work on my strategy for advanced levels.
Did not buy the game but will eventually do so when it's cheap enough. While I do like real time strategy I tend not to like the real time aspect of it. However this game can be paused at any time and even allows issuing commands to units and buildings while paused. That is awesome.
