MUTATION is an improvement, but largely more of the same
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

3.5

The graphics and story are better in this installment, but since it is a continuation of INFECTION's story, just as the title says, you can only expect more of the same. There are different flaws in this one, however. A lot of the recruitable characters are pretty lame, and the translation seems way more off this time. On the positive side, the environments look better, the overall graphics are better polished, and it was a pleasant surprise seeing some .hack//SIGN references. That might be a barrier for people who haven't seen the show (I haven't seen it in over 15 years). Cubia was an amazing boss fight, and I hope there are more like it in the series.

One of the things that hampered my enjoyment of the first game was waiting until the end to focus on optimizing my party's gear. Hopping from server to server to do all the upgrades in one stretch was a drag. So this time I've planned out their gear ahead of time so I can do it little by little.
