How many times can Jurassic Park do the whole "going back to the destroyed park to get a science macguffin" plot for a side story in other media?
Several times, apparently!
And unlike the Telltale Jurassic Park game, which I actually really enjoyed, this one is really, REALLY boring.
Have you played any stealth horror game in the last 20 years? You already know everything about this game's mechanics. It's so basic and so rote that I felt my eyes glazing over and my soul escaping. This whole "hide in the locker to avoid the chase beast" thing is just such a cliche at this point that I'm just so done with it.
The graphics in game really suck, too. Not because of any technical limitations, but because of how blocky and basic everything is. It uses this really gaudy comic book cell shading style, which can look really good when done well... But it's not done well here. It just kinda comes off looking cheap, like the decision to go with cell shading was done to make it seem like a stylistic choice and not lousy visual design.

Being that this is a VR game as well, it's jam-packed full of tedious little interactivity puzzles, where something as simple as flipping a switch is now a little mini-game you have to do over and over again.
And since we're on the topic of all the sinful cliches this game indulges in, perhaps the worst of them is the "silent protagonist with a radio buddy that tells you the plot" thing.
This game actually has me a little worried about the upcoming Jurassic Park: Survival, a stealth horror game where you... Go back to the destroyed park... To find a science macguffin. 🤦 Aftermath is clearly a game made on a limited budget, and I have to imagine Survival will at least make an effort to stand out from an extremely crowded subgenre, but I feel like "Explore a derelict base while avoiding dinosaurs" should be a winning idea.
I think part of the problem in Aftermath is that the dinosaurs don't act like animals... They act like video game enemies. They will never just mind their own business, they are always out to kill you, specifically. In line with the movies, sure. But the movies have more going on than just action scenes, too. And always knowing dinosaur = danger kinda kills the suspense a little, because the greatest fear comes in not knowing. That raptor outside playing with a rock, is he gonna turn tail and charge at you? Or is he just happy with a rock? A real animal is a dice roll - you never know for sure. In a video game? It's the enemy, it is supposed to kill and only kill.
You probably haven't heard of this game, and for good reason... I can't really recommend it, unless you absolutely must have a licensed Jurassic Park game in VR.
