AM2R, short for Another Metroid 2 Remake, is an action-adventure video game developed by Milton Guasti under the pseudonym DoctorM64, and released in August 2016 for Microsoft Windows, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Metroid series. It is an unofficial, enhanced remake of Nintendo's Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus (1991), borrowing the art style and overall feeling of the Game Boy Advance game Metroid: Zero Mission (2004). It is an unofficial, enhanced remake of Nintendo's Game Boy game Metroid II: Return of Samus (1991), borrowing the art style and overall feeling of the Game Boy Advance game Metroid: Zero Mission (2004). Shortly after the game's release, Nintendo sent DMCA notices to websites hosting AM2R; download links to the game were removed from its official website, but Guasti said that he still planned to continue working on the game privately. In September 2016, Guasti ended the development of AM2R after he received a DMCA takedown request from Nintendo. The game follows Samus Aran, who aims to eradicate the parasitic Metroids from their home planet SR388. It includes several new features, including redone graphics and music, a map system, and new areas and minibosses. The controls were changed to be less "floaty", in line with the gameplay of later titles in the series. Video game journalists appreciated the game, frequently calling it impressive and commenting on the improved visuals compared to those of the original Metroid II, although one thought the conditions required to win battles against Metroids were too specific considering how often they occur. The game was nominated for The Game Awards 2016, but was later removed from the nominations page without notice. Less

Samus takes aim at a winged enemy

AM2R is a fantastic remake of Metroid II. I definitely prefer it to the original: It maintains much of the same vibe, incorporates some new and really clever ideas, and punches way above its fan-game weight.

I did not prefer it to Nintendo's 2017 iteration, or really any of Nintendo's post-SNES entries. While I found the game much easier to control than I did Super Metroid, it still feels a tad off in that regard, and the boss battles never ascend to the same triumphant heights. But it's still a really great game, clearly made with a lot of love, and it deserves to be played if you're a fan of Metroid II and Zero Mission.

Old Dog New Tricks

This game is AMAZING....for what it is. If you ever played Metroid 2 like myself you may recall that it doesn't exactly hold up spectacularly when compared to it's later ancestors. Unlike Metroid 1, Metroid 2 never got a remake, until now!...and then again in like 2 months.

The point is if you like 2d Metroid, you'll at least like this. It REALLY feels like an official authentic Metroid title. Most of it's limitations are based on the title it is adapting. But it took a novel-for-the-time game and turned into something truly wonderful.

Is it the best Metroid game ever? No. It might even be one of the weaker 2d Metroids (not counting 1 and 2) However it is bar none the best way to play Metroid 2 (as of now...we'll see how Samus returns 3ds pans out) and at the low cost of FREE you really owe it to yourself to give it a try.

Better than Samus Returns

Aside from the typical annoying Metroid "you need to bomb every inch of everything to proceed", this was a pretty good game. That is to say, I didn't bail on it after a few hours like Samus Returns.

After fighting the final boss for an hour, however, and not even getting past the first phase, I had to consult the internet (something I hate doing... I want to figure out games on my own). It turned out that I was missing an out-of-the-way beam upgrade that I needed to be able to kill the boss' "projectiles". So, that wasn't very intuitive....

After beating Metroid Dread last week, I was left feeling a bit unsatisfied that it was over and wanted some more Samus Aran action. I've been meaning to check out AM2R for a while now so I went ahead and played through it on hard (HIGHLY recommend doing your first playthrough on hard!) in two days time. I feel like I enjoyed more aspects of AM2R than I did of Dread overall but that's just my personal opinion.

Here's what I enjoyed more about Dread:

  • Fun, challenging boss fights that felt really satisfying to win
  • The slide ability and Flash Shift are SO damn good, both were sorely missed in AM2R
  • Wall jumps are easily pulled off and jumping in general feels great

And here's what I enjoyed more about AM2R:

  • Great area variety, with each locale differing from the next and map layouts are easy to remember
  • Memorable, well done music
  • Basic enemies and area hazards can actually pose a threat
  • Tight controls (I LOVE d-pad for 2D games), reminiscent of Zero Mission
  • Neat, unlockable extras

AM2R also had some really great boss fights that felt really satisfying to beat but I'd still give the …

AM2R is done at 85% completion. What a great remake. I think I prefer Zero Mission for its pacing what it adds, but collecting items was much more fun in AM2R. It took me 5 hours to beat and I am ready for the big one of the 4.
