Morcys's review of Drakengard 3

This is my favorite game in the trilogy. I laughed a lot playing this title; I didn't expect it to be so funny. However, it's also worth noting that the excessive sexual jokes got tiring pretty quickly.

One man's trash is another man's treasure
This review is for the PlayStation Network (PS3) version

This is a weird game. It has simultaneously some of the strangest but at the same time best writing, combined with some of the most monotonous gameplay loops I've ever played.

I think it helps viewing the game as almost a parody of modern games. It plays up sex and killing to the extreme. The characters constantly talk about their kinks, how horny they are, or how much sex they're having, which can be quite off-putting at first. However, when it comes to emotional moments during the story, they do hit, and they hit hard. The killing is less prominent in the dialogue compared to the sex, but only because it is the main (and only) aspect of the gameplay. The main character Zero frequently vents her boredom and frustration at killing all the innocent guards. Zero acts as a stand-in for the player in this regard. It's meta-commentary by the director Yoko Taro about how desensitized and normalised killing in our media is.

Gameplay wise, there isn't really a lot here. The levels themselves are long corridors, mostly devoid of colour variety. After completing the first ending, you'll mostly run through the same levels but backwards. It's clear that …

After completing the first ending, you'll mostly run through the same levels but backwards. It's clear that Access Games was on a budget for this game, but I appreciate that they tried to introduce at least some variety by doing that. The weapon system offers some variety, but feels mostly forgettable and very situational.

There's no denying that there's a lot to dislike about this game, but don't let it deter you from giving it a chance. Beneath all the negatives, there's a very beautiful and impactful experience. Every aspect of the game - from the story, to the music, and the gameplay - work together to create an unforgettable finale. Highly recommended if you're a fan of the NieR series.

A horrible masterpiee

This game is a masterpiece. It's trash. It's so incredibly engrossing. It's tedious as fuck. Everyone should play it. You're better off watching a let's play on youtube.

It's impossible to say a single coherent thing about Drakengard 3 because for every true statement about this game, it's negation is also as true. So let's start with the basics.

The world was un chaos until 5 waifus came and enchanted everyone with their songs. Now these "Intoners" maintain peace by each presiding over their kingdom of simps. You play as Zero, the sixth waifu and your mission is to kill all the other sisters because you are an asshole that want to be the only Intoner. To that aim you plow through each Intoner's army of innocent minions, kill each of them and get their alpha simp (called the Disciple) into your party. Eventually you kill every sister and finish the game.

Except that that's not the whole story. It's not a spolier to say that there's so much more to it. As various "branches" alternative versions of the story and open up different endings the plot gets more and more convoluted and confusing. And while there is some method …

And while there is some method to the madness, but it's mostly madness.

Gameplay is... well, that's another thing that is mostly madness.

Most of the time the game is a tedious hack-and-slash affair in samey corridors interspersed with tedious dragon riding sections. And even if individual enemies are easily to kill, their sheer number combined with the unruly camera and the relative scarcity of healing items and checkpoints will force you to replay entire sections multiple times.

So how do you elevate a game that plays like shit if you don't have the budget to fix all the issues? You write your ass off into including the tedious gameplay into the story in a way that shows what the whole medium of gaming is capable of.

Every single character starts of as the most irredeemable piece of shit in the planet. Zero is a fucking terrible person that treats her loving pet dragon as a welcome mat and every Disciple is some disgusting sociopath, idiot or both. The whole party constantly mock the hundreds of innocent soldiers whose deaths and screams pave your path of destruction and are weirdly obsessed with sex.

But as Zero and her companions whine and complain about having to fight the same enemies over and over, cursing the bad platforming sections, and wanting to kill everything quickly to get over with it you as a player are forced to agree. Indeed, the game is so tedious and unfun to play, that you quickly start to roll your eyes at yet another wave of witless soldiers that are as easily dispatched as a booger stuck to your left nostril. You quickly start passing over their dialogue that shows them as loyal, brave and human. It's like a magic trick.

As you start empathising with these horrible bastards against your will, then the emotional moments come and hit like a ton of bricks. Zero starts to open up to her dragon and you see that all her insulting was a defence mechanism to hide a deep loss. You start to see that she's hurting as she kills her sisters. Eventually even the disciples are shown to be tragic figures enslaved by their destinies.

The first ending packs a surprising emotional punch and then you start the second playthrough, in which things start to get even weirder. The path through alternate realities fleshes out the plot and characters even more, also padding out the gameplay without the devs needing to design new areas or enemies, so it's a win-win.

Then, after about 20 hours you probably mastered the tedious combat so it's less of a chore the ending boss throws a massive curveball that is both a gorgeous and a complete slap in the face to the player.

The boring combat and player-hostile design might not be for everyone. I wouldn't have finished the game if I hadn't downloaded a save file with all the weapons unlocked, which is a stupid requisite to play the final branch. But Drakengard 3 is a hauntingly fascinating game that is a must play for anyone who enjoyed any of the weirdness in Nier.

Well, that final "boss" was a trip, huh?

What a weird and messy game this was. I loved it and hated it, but mostly loved it.

Got back to this after months of not playing. It took a while to get used to the controls but eventually got there. I forgot how tedious the combat actually was, but then the dialogue commented on how tedious the combat was and I forgave it.

Got to the start of the final "branch", but that's when the game fucks it up. That ending is locked behind getting every weapon, which involves tedious grinding for gold. I tried it a bit but was just too much. I was about to metaphorically throw the disc out the window when I realised, wait, I can't throw it out the window because I'm playing on an emulator, that means I can probably get a save file from some charitable soul that had the ending already unlocked and avoid the fucking grind! So I did!

God bless emulation. The best way to play console games really is on PCs.

Rolled credits but, as you would expect from a game by Yoko Taro, the game has multiple endings.

Fuck, this game is incredible. The gameplay sucks ass, but the writing is so good and the voice acting elevates it further. Somehow it manages to get you to empathise with this characters that are objectively terrible people.

The game works, I think, is precisely because the gameplay sucks. Zero and her companions are constantly whining, complaining about having to fight the same enemies over and over, cursing the bad platforming sections, and wanting to kill everything quickly to get over with it. And as a player... you're forced to agree. Indeed, the game is tedious and clunky and not fun to play, so you quickly start to roll your eyes at yet another wave of witless soldiers that pose no threat to you but stand on your path. You quickly start passing over their dialogue that shows them as loyal, brave and human. It's like a magic trick.

This is the main character obliquely (and correctly) insulting the developers for their awful level design and platforming.

The more I think about this game, the more I'm convinced it's a masterpiece.

Played maybe 60-90 min of this last night, I think this was Yoko Taro's last game before NieR Automata. Not into it, but I got some laughs out of the writing. I love how in most games you get dragons with names like "Placidusax" and "Paarthurnax", and in this game the first dragon you see is called "Michael".

The technical part + the gameplay of this Game is so bad, you wish you could just watch a movie of it. But it is one of the funniest games I have ever played. The Developers knew they don't have enough money to do a good game so they make fun of it with their Characters. So from time to time, Characters tell you how fed up they are by puzzles, jump and run platforms and boring level that make no sense at all. At the end everything is worth it for the laughs, the story and the over the top characters.
