One of the first plot threads in Station to Station is our protagonist Mara's relationship with her shitty long-distance boyfriend, Adam. He's abusive and controlling, and it's immediately clear that things will never work out.
But finding the courage to break up is tough, so in the opening hours of the game Adam just hangs over your head like an eager noose. Mara moves through the city, searching for her place within it and trying to hone her craft as a writer. But her every step is weighed down with the certainty that Adam will soon call again, that he'll keep chipping away at her self-worth, day in and day out, until nothing's left.
The villain's two states away, and 90% of the time Mara's just doing mundane stuff like attending class or reading snide Pitchfork reviews. But never in a game have I felt such an insistent need to escape.
