The game also requires the player to navigate a complex map requiring the player to find North and South points on the ground to go up and down levels as well as East and West by moving Rambo to the edge of the screen. There are 6 different weapons that Rambo can pick up that are knife, throwing knife, bow and arrow, bow and exploring arrow, gun, and hand grenade. All the weapons but the knife has limited ammo which is collected from killed enemies. There is also health vile that restores health as well as mission specific items that Rambo must find to complete some missions. The game uses password save that can be retrieved when talking to any person. Less

All The Most Annoying Elements From Castlevania And Zelda, But With Mediocre Look & Sound
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

Preliminary: Intense fiery beginning! And that phrase heh (this is the original Japanese version) enter image description here

Ok so I probably should've done the English version since there are very minor differences lol but I'm already past the first boss and saved the child... so I will just keep using the StrategyWiki to have any clue what's going on :-p and what they're saying... and what's in my inventory heh. Why can't I resist a grind? Lol here I am grinding to 300exp with Skulls that only give 10 each, all because there's a hut nearby that will heal me. There's something seriously wrong with me... (I notice no difference in power with leveling up though I'm sure there is... I def noticed the higher maximum health after the first boss tho!)

Play: 6/10 The illogical map looping and some of the other gameplay aspects like combat and jumping seem outright glitchy. But luckily people have worked out all the faults and quirks so I don't have to ha. As much as I was enjoying the grind, the adventure elements, and the Castlevania 2-esque feel to all of it, it kept coming up how clunky the controls are, delayed the turning is, and …

But luckily people have worked out all the faults and quirks so I don't have to ha. As much as I was enjoying the grind, the adventure elements, and the Castlevania 2-esque feel to all of it, it kept coming up how clunky the controls are, delayed the turning is, and mediocre the collision mask of the weapons are. Kinda reminding me of oh gosh what was the game I spent about 4 hours on before quitting near the end lol. Oh, Faxanadu.

Feel: 7/10 Ok mayyyybe I will have learned my lesson from Faxanadu and not go so deep... tho this one seems shorter. I am still hooked, grinding right now for extra Vials of Medicine. But more and more tacky and glitchy elements come up, like lol, the enemies can get hidden behind the level and just casually come floating out. That surely could not have been intentional right? Several illogical glitches already so far.

Look: 6/10 Mediocre, tho I liked the UI enough. It's not the first to do it nor did it add anything to it. Oh the Rambo sprite is good tho.

Sound: 6/10 At first good, but far too repetitive.

Attachment: 7/10 Yep, I'm proud of myself. It was around this point I knew it was time to stop. enter image description here Terrible collision masks for the enemy's bullets, and these new OP enemies only give 2 Exp lol. The Knife's collision mask continues to be awful and yea. Why keep going. The adventure elements are great, the Sound good tho already repetitive, and the RPG elements had potential--but as it is, very passable. I'm glad I managed to resist going on, it was really hard to officially stop. Maybe I'm learning orrrr maybe it's like what happened with earlier styles of games and the action-adventure-platformer trend has been going on long enough that I don't need to be all excited like it's the first one ever--now bad ones like this just feel like a lame copy of Zelda 2 (literally had the bubbles coming up from Zelda 2 ha).

Completion: A bit into Enemy Base Playtime: 1h 10m (wow, can't believe it had been that long. games are definitely getting longer and fuller as we end 87)

Saw Instazone's review, so thought I'd do my own.

Terrible, terrible Zelda II rip off.

You'd think it wouldn't be hard to make a Rambo game for the NES. Actually, there already is one, with a different name (Contra).

When I think Rambo, I think of Sylvester Stallone mowing down bad guys with machine guns, flaming bow and arrows or grenades. In this, you basically run in a loop in a jungle, fighting animals with a knife.

The N/S direction mechanic is just headache inducing.

The story choices are stupid. It makes it look like you have a "choice," but you don't. Until you pick the "right" choice, it'll just repeat. Why have these elements at all if the choices don't matter?

So yeah, you end up with a crappy Zelda II rip off.

I'll give it one additional star for the excellent beginning theme song and the last 5-10 minutes of the game, where you get good weapons and actually play a game somewhat like Contra.

However, if you have an NES and want to play Contra, skip Rambo and play Contra.
