Main game

This is one of those games where when it's good, it's excellent enough that I would give it a higher rating. It's atmospheric, quite spooky at points, and left me with enough things to think about that I immediately replayed it to try to pick up on new nuance. Unfortunately...the overall quality is very uneven. Some aspects of the story don't live up to their full potential, either in terms of atmosphere or story. The ending tied up the immediate plotline, but without answering questions that had been brewing for the full story.
In terms of gameplay, dialogue options are limited. While I grasp that adding more recorded lines probably called for budget they didn't have, the reliance on recycling them can make dialogues seem particularly stilted or ridiculous. The game is largely in monochrome with pops of color. It's lovely visually, but can make progression frustrating when most of a scene is rendered in black and white and the cursor doesn't change when you're over an area you can interact with. As a result, some puzzles really overstay their welcome.

If the description interests you, it's worth playing--parts of it are pretty chilling, and I did genuinely enjoy watching some of the subplots unfold. Just go into it with the understanding that parts of this are too ambitious for their own good. Three stars out of my customary four.
Part of me is disappointed by the limited dialogue options (example: someone says "We don't say those names in this town!" The natural response would be "Why?" Instead you get: "I looked around today!" or "Can you teach me about local folklore and crafts?") but the other part of me wonders if it's not an in-character choice given that Captain Obvious doesn't seem to be the brightest crayon in the box. "It's too dark to see with my own eyes here!" Nigel, my friend, allow me to tell you about this glorious invention called a FLASHLIGHT.
I'll give him full marks for courage, though. Half the stuff he cheerfully investigates in this game is stuff that would have me heroically wetting my pants if I ran into it IRL.
This game is quite fun and pretty spooky, just started playing it. It's from 2008.

Not sure how I feel about the outfit choices of the protagonist though. He's wearing a puffer vest and one of those bald guy hats, and has a pretty serious goatee.
