Very early dungeon-crawler, it is the first known roguelike pre-dating Rogue itself though no link between the two games exists.

Well-Executed Introduction to the Graphic Rogue/Dungeon Crawler Genre

Look: 7/10 Fine enough. Decidedly ahead of its time, in the sense that it is a graphic version of a rogue game.

Play: 9/10 A great example of pre-rogue rogue games (heh). Excited to get access to PLATO for even earlier ones. This game really is ahead of its time in terms of its gameplay and its execution. Like many games of its year attempted this concept but few could make it so graphic. I mean, I know it's still a dot and whatnot but... heh. Plus, the random generation, the customizability, the list could go on. This rating may even go up on future playthroughs. My main complain is, there are sooo many darn commands. Thank goodness for the manual. And, once you get rng for a sword early (and/or zap too), the game is even more fun heh. Super cool you can determine the difficulty and length, essentially, of the game. This has everything I like in a game: RPG elements, high concept, and customizable difficulty/length. However, it's ultimately very frustrating gameplay that I may be iffy about after playing later games and trying to return. For now, I love it. (This is overrated more or less because …

Play: 9/10 A great example of pre-rogue rogue games (heh). Excited to get access to PLATO for even earlier ones. This game really is ahead of its time in terms of its gameplay and its execution. (This is overrated more or less because I really like how you can customize the challenge level etc., the variability of the gameplay is severely lacking, of course, especially as get to later levels, and this really probly deserves an 8 if not for the customizability.)

Feel: 8/10 Quite frustrating at times, but wow is this incredible. Love so many of the concepts. Essentially no end (skipping the apple and wandering ever deeper), but a clear end (finding the apple). I read about some nether region? This is ahead of its time in so many ways, in being rogue, in its procedural generation, in its RPG qualities manifest. wow this is incredible. essentially no end but a clear end, could just keep going. As previously mentioned, the manual is invaluable. As also previously mentioned, I absolutely love that you can customize the game, picking the difficulty and number of rooms, which for me, depends on the mood I'm in and how long I have to play, respectively. The frustrations, ultimately, outweighed the joy of the game, but I can't deny I want to jump right back on it tomorrow and perhaps again in the future. It has an odd cling to it, as do many frustrating dungeon crawlers/rogues in my experience heh. I think I could say this is more conceptually amazing, than actually amazing. In many ways, this describes my experience with all rogue/dungeon crawler games, because I mostly avoided them when younger. I knew rogue/dungeon crawler would be a genre I would be able to overcome my aversion to, glad to see it happen.

Attachment: 8/10 When I return to early graphic games like Superman and Adventure and Dragonstomper, this one definitely should be on the list. Perhaps even more than Adventure does. I love the RPG elements to what is otherwise a maze/randomly generated adventure game. I will almost definitely be replaying this, though we will see as I get distracted with later and later games...
