It's impossible to not compare this game to 2022's The Excavation of Hob's Barrow and I have to say, while it's not quite up to Cloak and Dagger's masterpiece, anyone who enjoyed that game will probably enjoy this. This game takes place in 1907 and follows a more realistic story of period-appropriate believers using 'science' to contact the other side as well as mediums and seances.
It doesn't have any cinematic scenes or Hobs' rising tension and terror but the story is good, the puzzles are challenging (less so in the second half of the game) and there is enough tension to keep you engaged. The ending also doesn't leave you with as many questions as Hob's Barrow and follows a pretty standard horror trope.
It also features real characters from history and a soundtrack of actual music recording from 1907.
All in all, at 7-8 hours of playtime, worth your time for $14.
If you enjoy cozy ghost stories with aristocratic professors, solid puzzles, and great pixel art - this nails it.
It reminds me a ton of both The Last Door and The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow. The pixel art is excellent with nice detailed backgrounds with a wide variety of locations. The dialogue writing is sharp and witty. The puzzles are the perfect amount of difficulty. Often, you just had to think “what would I do in this situation” and the answer was always logical.
The only real complaint I have is a somewhat abrupt ending, but enjoyable nonetheless.
