Nostalgic Sadism
This review is for the Nintendo 3DS version

After putting this game on the back burner for half of a year, I finally powered through and finished getting 3 stars on every challenge.

If you're the type of person who really likes having that speed-runner part of your brain tickled from time-to-time, this is a nice run down memory lane. Me? I killed that part of my brain with alcohol & about 12hrs of Bloodborne years ago.

Some of the remixes between different classic NES games were neat & interesting. Some of them, however (I'm looking at you, non-jumping-Link trying to play Donkey Kong), were just plain cruel.

For the games I was familiar with, doing all of the quick little challenges was fun. I'd never played a Kirby game before, and the little Kirby sections were... intriguing, I guess.

Some of these games, however, were never actually good, and didn't deserve to be resurrected in 3DS form (I'm looking at you Kid Icarus, Balloon Fight, and the non-Super original Mario Bros). Many NES games were hard because they relied on tons of memorization & pattern recognition. Others -- like Mario Bros -- were hard because the controls just sucked in a really non-fun way.

Also, Zelda II …

Also, Zelda II was the best Zelda. Fight me.

Ever try playing the first level of Donkey Kong, but you're not allowed to jump?

It's horseshit.

Decided to wrap up most of the other games I'm not super big on in this...some quick thoughts: Luigi's traction in Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP) is bonkers, and the game mixing up Mario and Luigi is a cruel exercise in brain transitions. I wish I liked Kid Icarus and Zelda II more than I do (I actually don't like Zelda II at all!), but at least I get to play through their more dynamic parts now! And Excitebike is fun in short bursts for me, and this was just about the right amount of time. I've only got Dr. Mario left, and I don't like Dr. Mario, so I'm leaving it alone. :p
